The Voice of a Friend
The Voice of a Friend
Some days there is a fine line between sanity and not. You desperately want to run away from that line because to cross it is to define yourself as something you would rather not be, yet you cannot do that because the line is not in a physical place; it is in your own mind. Food or drink can serve to numb the pain in your heart and distractions may work for awhile, but there is really no escaping the presence of the line or the rising panic you feel when you know it is uncomfortably close at hand.
As the line draws closer, or rather, you draw closer to it, your emotions swirl out of control and you begin to believe that your sense of self is about to be lost for awhile. Then the phone rings, an e-mail comes in, a text message pops up or there is a knock at the door. A friend is there, wondering how you are, whether there is anything they could do to help you. In that voice of a friend is hope, compassion, a path back to firmer emotional ground. It is the voice of humanity, of dignity, of a saving grace. If you are a spiritual person, it may seem like the voice of God telling you that you will eventually be OK. Is yours the voice of a friend today?
