SO Stressed!

 Leigh,

If you want the DS, you should get the DS and not settle for anything else and be unhappy about it.  Yes, you might have to convince Dr. I.  Go into your next appointment with him and show him that you have researched the DS, and why you feel it is best for you ( you had said you don't want the blind stomach in you, that is a big reason).  I think I have said, print out some documents/ studies for your next appointment.  If Dr I still doesn't want to do the DS on you there are still 2 other DS surgeons in at the U, Dr. Buchwald (been doing the DS forever) and Dr. Leslie ( he is relatively new to the DS, but I just met one of his patients this past weekend, and also trained under DR. I , I believe).

This period of the journey is by far the most stressful, believe me I know.  I was strung along at another practice for 6 months before they told me they couldn't perform any surgery on me and then another 2 months before I could get in at the U, and then another 2 weeks before a plan was in place.  Those 2 1/2 months in between were probably the worst times of my life.  Things DO get better, and the stress goes away very quick..

Good luck with this and I hope the stress eases a little, If you have any questions feel free to message me.

Jeff

Like Diamond Girl said - stick to your guns, it's your decision. Dr I is a great surgeon, and he probably has his 'beliefs' about the DS - but they are his. He DOES the DS and he believes in it . . . . but maybe not for everyone. But the sad truth is, he may have seen some poor health/labs post-DS . . . but that's the AFTERCARE's problem, not a problem with the DS. DO NOT under any cir****tances believe what they tell you to eat or what supplements to take. Shake your head and agree, then walk out and forget what they tell you! If he's seeing 'issues', it's due to the poor aftercare training the U has in place - just get the REAL deal here from the vets.

Thank you everyone!

I think what I will do is like Jeff (I think that's who said it) said and print out documents and type up a bulleted sheet of reasons why I would be better with a DS and why I do not want a RNY.

That way he will see that I've done my homework and that I mean business :)

My appointment is 7/12 at the Piper Building at Abbott Northwestern.

I just wi**** was sooner so I know for sure!!

I really concur with all the others.  If you know your own habits and eating style, and you know you will go above and beyond even Dr. Ikrammuddin's vitamin/mineral advice to stay healthy, and be consistent about it forever, the DS is worth fighting for.  If you know you'll have a hard time arguing your case verbally, the bulleted list is good.

Is the nurse that really tan, petite woman?  If so, she is nice but she thinks DSers eat a whole stick of butter at one sitting, so I wouldn't trust her DS advice either.

Maybe? She is tall and thin and has short hair. She calls me sweetie and honey a lot....

I'd pay to watch someone eat a stick of butter...LOL
