SO Stressed!

Hi!

I know I'm a newbie with all kinds of issues. I hope you forgive me for all of the questions.

Originally, I wanted to get a DS because the quality of life seems so much better than a RNY and I liked that I wouldn't have an unused stomach "floating" around inside me. But when I met with Dr. I, he said that I would be an excellent candidate for RNY because I'm young and "not that big", so I didn't argue.

But, now with doing more research, I really want to do the DS.  I'm just afraid to tell Dr. I that because I'm afraid that I will have to convince him and that he won't do surgery on me at all. And I'm afraid to discuss it with his nurse because she had a RNY and she'd be biased. I know the surgeon knows best, but honestly, I feel like I would do a lot better with a DS with maintaining weight and such.

Sigh...I just don't know how to go about it. I just feel like I would regret it in the future if I went ahead and did the RNY.  Do you veterans have any advice?

That my dear is your choice and no one elses.......If you do not want the RNY then don't because only you know................If they say they won't do the surgery then, say okay thank you for your time......There are many surgeons out there.....Do what you want NOT what someone else wants...............This is about YOU not them.............. Good luck sweetie and keep us posted................

Leigh,

I would just tell them what you told us.....That you want the DS.....I believe Doctors do know what's good for us, but not always what's right for us.....I hope that made sense.....You need to have the surgery that you want......

Hang tough and best wishes.....Kelly

Don't be stressed, hon. It's YOUR decision on which surgery to have. Dr. I's responsibility is to talk you through the surgeries so you understand what you're getting with each one. He can weigh in on why he feels one is better for you than another, but at the end of the day like my surgeon told me "you have to live with it for the rest of your life, I just do the cutting". So remember that, and remember that it is YOUR decision.

No need to be afraid to call Bridgette/Dr. I with your decision. Be proud of your self that you did your research and you found the bariatric surgery for you!!!

I'm hoping to get a call back today from Lauralee about whether they will change it. Do you think I will have to meet with Dr. I again to talk about switching to a DS or will they just switch it on all the paper work? I met with him once already and I meet with him again in 3 months.  I'm meeting with the dietician on Friday so I will know exactly how I need to switch my diet and all of the vitamins. I've been doing a lot of research and I have ordered some of my vitamins already :)

Thank you for all of your support!

Well, I'm not certain on whether you'd have to meet with him again or not before your visit in 3 months, but I wouldn't think so. It would need to be changed on the O.R. schedule so he has more time alotted for surgery if needed, but that's probably about it at this point.

As for the vits, follow the DS board guidelines or VitaLady's. The U is not current with their information and you'll end up deficient before you know it after surgery so listen to the vets on the DS board. I have the VL schedule if you need it, just let me know. I can email it to you.

Keep me posted on what you find out.

Thank you!

I talked to Lauralee today and she seemed against me doing a DS because my BMI is only 46. She urged me to call insurance to see if they would even cover me if I was under 50. I called Preferred One and they said that they would cover it, as long as I got everything done such as the MMPI and stuff and had the surgeons office submit the paperwork.

And I did have to schedule another appointment with Dr. I, and it isn't until fricken July. So I have to wait for July to know whether I can go ahead with a DS or not. I'm worried about having to convince Dr. I  to give me a DS instead. :(

Gawd, I hate that I have to wait until July to know what the plan is. I wonder if I can call and talk to Dr. I directly instead of wasting his and my time with another appointment?

I stand firm in telling you this is YOUR decision! I'm not the surgeon and I'm not the insurance company. But, I believe 100% from my heart that you have to LIVE with the surgical re-workings of your innards and it's your decision. Unless Dr. I. has a very strong opinion as to WHY medically you should have one surgery vs. the other, then I'd listen to what he has to say. But if he's going purely off of age and BMI, he's got no business. We've had DS'ers who have been YOUNGER than you and who have had BMI's LOWER than your's. So, yeah, I'm passionate about this being YOUR decision!!! (uh, can you tell? LOL!)

Keep your chin up girl! I'm in the ring with you and I'm ready to put my gloves on for ya.

I'll be at the U on 7/17 supporting two other DS hopefuls. When is your appt? PM me. Maybe we can hook up for a coffee before or after at the cafeteria.

There is a thing in life called "BUYER REMORSE"  That is all fine and good on purchasing a used car or a hard to program electronic device. What we have here is you facing a basically UNREVERSABLE choice.
If you really want a DS and get an RNY....What are you going to do down the road. Each choice has advantages and disadvantages. Which one will you follow success to the end. If you get an RNY and find that you don't like the ramifications..will you give up or forge on ahead to your goals?
For me it was RNY or do it on my own, I was doing pretty well without surgery for awhile. I chose to have the operation. It was a real "life changer" for me. I have lost a bunch of weight but at this point find that there is no "magic" just eat less and exercise more. If I snack-graze...No weight loss. So no matter what you choose, you will need to make the necessary lifestyle changes. There are losts of rewards, but like anything else there is NO FREE LUNCH.

You need to embrace whatever choice you make.\
