Could I be a latent dumper?
Ok, I'm 9-months out, and I am wondering if I could be dumping all of the sudden, when I hadn't previously.
Situation: I had yogurt (light) and some granola--both have some sugar, but it is a common breakfast or snack for me with no issues. However, today I am noticing that there is a pattern of extreme tiredness about :20 mins or less after eating it. I feel a bit jittery (like a caffine buzz--is that my heart racing you all mention?) I have not had any upset stomach issues associated with it--no running to the bathroom nor reaching for the wastebasket.
I am recalling that this same symptom set may have occurred over the past week(s), though I had not pegged it to an eating issue.
When I say that this is a late onset of dumping, I want to let you know that I have had my share of sugar over the past 9-months--no obscene amounts, but full-on servings of sugar as ice cream or a candy bar. Historically, those had not caused any problems; but maybe something has changed in my system at this time?
Is there such a thing as a latent dumping syndrome when it had not been present earlier?

BAM! Dump city!
It's just your tool reminding you to behave. Be GLAD you dump! There are those who don't dump on anything and really WISH they would! (I fall into that category myself 80% of the time).
Absolutely. And it can come on at any time, with any trigger than hasn't triggered it previously. You might eat (fill in the blank) one day and have NO PROBLEM - then 3 days later eat the exact same thing and
YAY!!! YOU DUMP!!! WOO HOO!!!! PARTAY!!!

Imperfect does not = unsuccessful
Darla,
Thanks for your quick reply. I appreciate your confirming my suspicion. While I've admitted to some refined sugar since Sx, it was only this most recent dance with seemingly innocent low-sugar yogurt and granola, where I found it apparent.
I'll keep watching the action/reaction to see if this is indeed what's going on.

Hi Dan! It's been awhile since I said hi. I can get the same thing occassionaly from yogurt. Most of the time I'm fine as long as I watch the sugar grams on the kind I buy. But somedays I get a mild dumping jittery yucky feeling. I haven't had any sugar at all because of my reactions to some of the sugar in some of the "regular" foods I've had.
It's a bummer when you innocently eat something that's always been ok and you get slapped out of no where!
Hope Stacy is well, pass on my best. Hope to make it to coffee in the next week or two. I'd love to see everyone.

I was doing the granola/yogurt thing too... basically what my NUT told me is that the yogurt is carbs/sugar and some protein, and the granola is fiber but mostly just a carb... so putting it together and no other protein involved just spells disaster.. our stomachs are too small to regular the carb/sugar thing and basically our insulin goes up and wham.. late dump... She said skip teh granola and eat a protein with the yogurt, or add protein powder to the yogurt/granola mix so the insulin rise doesn't happen as easily. I just gave up the granola (carbs/cals I didn't need)...
I'm sure you're having what is called Reactive Hypoglycemia.. basically a "late dumping syndrome"... Thats what my WLS office calls it.
I totally get this if I eat sugary or carb foods w/o protein...
I have a hand out I can email you about it you want me to send it... here's what it says:
- Reactive hypoglycemia is the normal side affect after RNY if you eat the wrong foods.
- Because the stomach is so small after surgery it can empty quickly, more quickly than a large stomach. Even small amounts of sugar (or a simple starch that can digest quickly into sugar) may cause a more rapid rise in blood sugar than usual.
- the body over-estimates how much insulin to release in order to process the sugar, causing a drop in blood sugar about 1-2 hrs later. Symptoms include:
-hunger
- weakness
-sweating
-rapid pulse
-need to lie down
Treatment is a small amount of sugar or juice followed by a meal of protein and complex carbs (whole wheat or veggie starch)
Prevention is to avoid simple carbs/sweets. Focus on high protein foods, veggies, fruits, whole grains. Eat very small amounts of sugar, white rice, cereal, white bread, etc.
Always try to pair sugar/carbs with protein to prevent this reaction.
I can't eat carbs/sugar w/o protein.. not only will I hypoglycemic dump.. but I know its not a healthy choice. So thats my rule.. no carbs w/o protein.
Hope this helps!

Hi Dan,
I am nearly 7 months out and up until a few week ago had NO problem eating small amounts of anything. Then suddenly a bowl of protein cereal caused me all the symptoms you described, as well as bad stomach cramps. I figure my issue may be latent lactose intolerance, as other sugsras do not bother me. I have tested this theory twice since then and know it's the milk. Can do cheese and such with no problem tho. So I believe it's totally possible, even being as far out as we are, that dumping and other issues can happen suddenly.
Be well,
Shannon
