I Biked 106 Miles Today
I turn 50 in a couple of days. One of my biggest goals this year was to be able to ride my bike 100 miles in one day (a "Century" in biking parlance) when I turned 50. I did that today with my wife providing food, liquids and support as I went along. I rode from our cabin north of Leech Lake down to Brainerd, a total of 106 miles. It took me a little less than 10 hours, including an hour for a lunch break and another 45 minutes of short breaks throughout the day. For inquiring minds who want to know: I drank more than a gallon and a half of water and consumed a bit more than 3500 calories.... I had to eat something every hour to avoid running short of energy In addition to my resting metabolic rate of 1900 calories per day, I estimated my bicycle calorie burn at something over 5,000 calories today.
I am tired and have had a few short-duration leg cramps. Aside from that and some residual numbness in my arse and in the twig and giggle-berries, I actually feel great. I still can't believe that the fat guy I used to see in the miror, who weighed almost 380 pounds a couple of years ago, has changed enough physically to do what I did today. During the last mile of my ride I had to hold back tears of joy (me being emotional....big surprise there). Life at 50 is good.

Be extremely proud of yourself! What an accomplishment! Go treat yourself to a 90 minute massage, sit in a hot tub, hit up a sauna, drink lots of water and don't stop grinning for a long time for what you did today! Congratulations!!!

I'm down 120 pounds - thanks to RNY! Working on the next 25. Then I'll tackle more...

Rick,
We've only talked a few times online, here, but I've watched your posts for a couple years, now. I am so happy to see your having ridden the century. I know that that's a terrific milestone to have achieved, and I hope to get there myself some day. Like you, I know that it's an attainable goal; and I know it's a significant threshold to have crossed through. Your brief story above makes it even more plausible that I will some day attain the same. I'm not ready yet, but in time I will.
Keep up the great pace on all levels: health, nutrition, familial and your biking goals. Your documentation of your WLS journey has shown that it has paralleled the century ride: great hills to overcome, thrilling freewheel downhills, lengthy straightaways demanding endurance, and a breathless finish line. In your rear view, it was a tough accomplishment which you can now see was well within your grasp.
Keep it up.

WOW!!! You are an inspiration beyond words! You always put things into perspective to make goals sound so attainable! I am just starting to understand I can do more than before surgery but I have to learn to work through the discomfort/pain to get there stometimes. Keep up the good work RP!! Keep inspiring us all.. and Happy Birthday this week!!
