Now What????
I am approaching my 6 week out marker for RNY and for the past 1 1/2 weeks I have only been able to keep very little down. I went to the doctor on Friday and they did a swallow test and it didn't look as if anything was blocked, but then why can't I keep anything down???? I had IV Therapy Friday and Saturday this weekend and it helped a little, but I'm still puking about 3/4 of what I eat up. Anyone have a similar issue or have any suggestions on what to ask the doctor next? I'm frustrated and ready to just give up on this!!!
You are still fairly new to this....stick with liquids and take time to heal. What kinds of food are you eating?? I remember at first several things didn't agree with me. now at almost 3 years out there are still things I can't eat.
Hope someone else has some better ideas for you.
Continue to keep in touch with your doctor/nutritionist. They do know what is best for you.
Good Luck!!

Yeah, I would definitely keep following up with your docs office (surgeon). What kinds of foods are you trying to get down? Are foods the only thing causing you problems or are you having problems getting liquids down too? Is there any pain when you eat or drink or are you just sick to your stomach? Definitely keep getting your liquids in so you don't get dehydrated & keep following up with your doctor to let them know that you still can't keep any food down. If you're not able to tolerate the food you're trying to eat maybe go back a 'level' (such as if you're at soft foods now maybe try going back to pureed, or maybe go back to full liquids for a bit). You're still healing & your new pouch may not like the foods you're trying to introduce to it. The new pouch can be quite sensitive while it's healing in the beginning.
But please keep in touch with your doc, they know what's best & what course of action would be best to take next. Hope you start feeling better soon!

Keep in touch with your providers! I had the swallow test done and the radiologist read it as negative. They sent me for an endoscopy anyway and I had a stricture between my pouch and small intestines. They stretched it and I felt SO much better afterwards! Before I called the clinic I had just told myself that this was just the way it was going to be for me. I threw up everytime I ate because I could never drink anything due to the pain and discomfort (even up to 3 hours later). Things are so much better now. Good luck!
You have every reason to be frustrated if you're puking up 3/4 of what you eat! But you just had your insides re-arranged, so just giving up on this really isn't an option. At least, not yet. There are always a few who have problems early out - but I can't think of anyone who, at their one year surgiversary, wishes they hadn't done it! So take a deep breath, and try to figure out what the problem is.
Basic questions - are you taking tiny bites? Chewing everything until it's applesauce consistancy? Taking your TIME to eat? Using sauces or creams can help with drier meats and such (white chicken meat and ham just about KILLED me early out! As a matter of fact, I STILL can't do white meat!)
You HAVE to follow those basic rules, or you WILL upchuck. If you believe you are being very good with them all, then insist on a scope to check for a stricture. I haven't had a swallow test, but if they're watching for a liquid to pass through your pouch, it's probably not an accurate test.
Good Luck, and DO NOT GIVE UP! The end will be worth any amount of hassle you have to deal with at this point!
