I did it! I'm home now!... One Question
I finally did it. I had my RNY yesterday and I'm home now. It feels good to be home. I'm now challenged with how on Earth to get so much protein and fluid in ... but think I can manage. I never thought the 3 tablespoons of creamy chicken broth and protein shake would 1) taste so good and 2) take me 30 min to eat.... but it did. :)
For those of you that had lap RNY, did most of you rpain lie on the left side? I feel like the majority of my pain is left upper quad.... and I get so nervous that Im drinking too much or something's going on in there. Any advice?
I can't wait to start this journey!

Upper left is where the majority of the pain for me was! I think I heard somewhere that that is where the largest instrument enters so you can really feel it in the muscles. Hang in there! Just do the best you can for liquids and protein shakes. You have to constantly be drinking something. Best of luck! You'll be feeling great in no time!
Hi Alyssa - we had the same surgeon - he is great!
I honestly don't remember much pain, but after nearly seven months, I guess that memory fades. I know I didn't use pain pills much after I got home, since they did make me nauseous.
As far as the eating and drinking go, just do your best. The time goes quickly, and you'll be on your way! I have no problem getting the proper amounts in now.
All the best to you - this journey is a wild one! Enjoy the changes.

I'm down 120 pounds - thanks to RNY! Working on the next 25. Then I'll tackle more...

Congratulations & welcome home!
The best advice is the old "walk, sip, rest and repeat". Dehydration comes quickly when you don't have those hospital IV's pumping you with fluids, so be sure and just sip sip sip. I remember crying one day after I got home because I just wanted a big gulp of water and it was not going to happen and I thought how in the heck does anyone get beyond this. But magically, with time, it does!
I did not have a lap RNY surgery, but do remember they blow you up with gas for a lap surgery, so it can tend to get trapped. That is the reason behind all the walking advice. Do walk, even if just around your house for a minute because it will really help to move that gas out.
And you've already started this journey, so sit back and enjoy the ride! Post your WOW moments and take pictures and measurements as you go. Trust me, they are fun to look back at...and sometimes necessary when we feel the results aren't where we want them to be. Helps with the big picture perspective.
Good luck!

I had mine done lap and it did hurt more in that upper left quad. Also, don't be surprised if your arms/shoulders start to hurt within the next couple of days-that tends to be where the gas escapes and it can be painful. Keep up with the walking and sipping though and you will get through the hardest part of recovery quicker.
Also, when i was first home from surgery, i found that room temp water was easier on my pouch than cold water because it didn't make my pouch spasm.
Oh and if you think that Chicken broth tastes good, wait until you can start eating mush! One thing I did when I got to that stage is I made "Chicken mashed potatoes" I took an entire boiled chicken breast, some boiled potatoes put them into a blender and added some of the broth from boiling the chicken and then purreed the hell out of it until it was runny. It was a great way to get my protien in and it tasted better than some of the other protien choices that were available for me to choose from.
Congratulations on your surgery and best of luck in your recovery!

Mmmmmmmm that sounds delightful. LOL chicken mashed potatoes! Too funny. Dr. Schwarts progresses a little quicker than most docs, I've heard. I'm on full liquids/purees - as long as it can fall off a spoon. :) Im looking forward to hearing everyone's creative ideas!
