For anyone out there that has issues, I need help, advice....

I wasn't sure what was happening to me, so I asked at group and they felt it's hyperglycemia....

It happens almost daily, I was starting to think it was from drinking my Turtle Mocha's at Caribou.....But it happend again just a little bit ago and I haven't had Caribou.....

My symptoms are: Dizziness, shaky, things kinda look dark, spaced out feeling just not with it, sometimes I get clamy.......

Today I had :
3 cups caff. free coffee
24oz. water
B-Egg with cheese
snack- 1/2 c. cottage cheese with pineapple

Would any of those bring this on????

Thanks, Kelly

What did you put in the coffee? Hyper-glycemia is high blood sugars, Hypo-glycemia is low. Are you on diabetic meds? Dizzy and shaky are usually associated with low blood sugars. High blood sugars usually give feelings of lethargy and blurred vision, frequent urination, thirsty, fruity taste in mouth and sometimes itchy skin.
Do you have a meter?  They are relatively cheap, as the makers know they make it up on test strips. You could get a small supply to test or find a diabetic freind that is close for a free test.

With your weight loss you are more likely to have low blood sugars, however, I look at my diabetes like: I have a poor regulator of blood sugars, it can go from too high to to low without a balance of nutrition, meds and exercise.

Hypoglycemia is a condition that occurs when your blood sugar
(glucose) is too low. Symptoms: Cold sweats; Confusion; Convulsions;
Coma; Double vision or blurry vision; Fatigue; General discomfort ...

Hyperglycemia in diabetes may be caused by:

  • Skipping or forgetting your insulin or oral glucose-lowering medicine
  • Eating too many grams of carbohydrates for the amount of insulin administered or just eating too many grams of carbohydrates in general
  • Eating too much food and having too many calories
  • Infection
  • Illness
  • Increased stress
  • Decreased activity or exercising less than usual
  • Strenuous physical activity

What Are the Symptoms of Hyperglycemia in Diabetes?

If you have diabetes, it is important to know the early signs of hyperglycemia. If hyperglycemia is left untreated, it may develop into ketoacidosis (if you have type 1 diabetes) or HHNS (if you have type 2 diabetes), both of which are serious emergencies..

Early signs of hyperglycemia in diabetes include:

  • Increased thirst
  • Headaches
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Blurred vision
  • Frequent urination
  • Fatigue (weak, tired feeling)
  • Weight loss
  • Blood sugar more than 180 mg/dL
Take care of yourself. You might want to see a PCP to check this out.

In my coffee I had 2 packets of sweet & low and a little SF vanilla carmel creamer....

No, I've never been diabetic....

Now I'm confused, I didn't realize there was Hyper and Hypo....

I bet they said Hypo at support group....

I see my nurse and Bariatric Doctor the middle of may for my 2 year (LATE) appt....

Hmm. My symptoms are a little different than these.....

Thanks for the info, kelly

Kelly,

Remember...balance, balance, balance in all things. This could be a reaction to sugar alcohols, or to fat (in the creamer). It could be a form of dumping. We NEED carbohydrates in our diet. Add healthy carb choices into each meal and see if that makes a difference.

Stress seems to cause hyper-sensitivity with me, and it seems like those types of symptoms can come out of the blue. The more I try to balance my small, frequent meals...the better I feel.
Hang in there.

Cheryl,

I don't think I'm getting in enough protein.....I'm trying to cut back on eating so I can lose weight......But these symptoms were happening before, so it can't be from cutting back....

I agree stress does so much.....But actually my stress is at it's all time low, thank God.....

Good word, Balance.....I need to find mine.....

Kelly,

I'm thinking as well that they said Hypo not hyper.   It could be hypo (low blood sugars)   I am diabetic and will get that way if I don't eat.  If you exercised and only at that amount it's very possible that's what it is.   I would see if you can find someone that has a meter you could borrow or something so next time it happens you could check.  How did you come out of feeling that way?   Usually if it's low blood sugar you won't come out of it withough something to eat or drink.   Could also be low blood pressure.   I've felt that way with my blood pressure being low...really exactly what you explained.

Michelle,

It really happens at all sorts of times, during exercising, or well after I eat, sometimes even in the car driving, which is really freaky because sometimes i get so dazed feeling it's scary to drive......

But I'm documenting everything so when I go in they maybe able to tell me what's going on....

Hopefully I can get a meter or something to check myself, it would be interesting to see what my levels are when I'm having an episode....

What is a normal reading????

Thanks for posting, Kelly

Kelly, another suggestion (because the above are good one's from my diabetic knowledge as well) is to read Melting Mama's blog. Do you know how to find her via OH? She has been through the ringer with all this stuff and it might just be some great info for you at the point.

Sometimes your PCP can even get you a glucose monitor for free - I have had two & never have paid for either. We have a diabetic educator on staff at the clinic I go to and that's who I had to see to get them both times.

Keep a log of your symptoms, what you ate before and after, and the time it started & ended. This might give your bariatric nurse some tangible information to work with next month.

Definitely watch those mocha's though! Sneaky devils. Sugar, fat, and espresso. Probably not the best combo for you.

Thanks Amy,

This week I've been logging what I eat and when....And also logging when I feel these symptoms.....

Hopefully the nurse can get me something to check my levels, because sometimes I feel so out of it, dazed and dizzy.....And when the shakes come on, OMG.....

I will check out Melting Mama, Thanks...

Kelly

You're welcome. I hope you can find an easy solution! Those symptoms are not fun companions.

Any way you can get in sooner??
