My house is located in a forest of oak trees and poison ivy, so we have had numerous experiences with poison ivy. I don't know what kind of prescription medicaitons work, but, iIf you can find it, the thing that seems to work best for me with the itching is something called Rhuli Gel. I think we got ours at a Snyder's drug store several years ago. I don't know where you would find it now.

My hubby got poison Ivy 2 weeks before our wedding! It drove him NUTS! I do NOT recommend what he did - he took a bath in an overdose of Aveeno, and broke out the green scrubby! Looked like HELL for a few days, but by golly, it seemed to kill the itch once and for all, and by the time we got married, he looked fine!
Imperfect does not = unsuccessful
My DH gets poison ivy just by looking at it...we keep a product called Tech Nu in the house and when he comes in from being near poison ivy he scrubs with this stuff and it really gets rid of the oil. He doesn't use anything once he already has it. I think it can last a couple weeks, all depends on the person and the severity of the reaction.
Best anti itch solution I found is taking an old sock w/o any holes, filling it with oatmeal, and putting in bath. My doctor recommended this when during my first pregnancy I had a full body rash. I've used this method since for everything from chicken pox to poison ivy. Having 3 kids that were into everything, I've had to use it a lot! Hope it helps!
