IV therapy again
I am exactly 4 weeks out today. I don't know if anyone else has had this problem or not. I can eat just fine....I'm on soft solids and have been eating chicken, tilapia, tuna, mashed cauliflower, etc. for almost a week now. Other then some pressure/pain after my meal which I am taking as I'm full, food is my friend.
Drinking however, is still a problem. I used to drink 70-100 oz a day before surgery. Now I'm lucky if I get in 25oz. I had IV therapy 3 days last week, and I was hoping not to go back. After talking to the nurse today, I have to go back Friday and Saturday.
It's not that I'm not drinking because I forget, but because it hurts, badly. I can actually feel the drink hit my pouch, and boy does it not feel good. I've tried tea, crystal lite (room temp), plain water, milk, and everything is the same. They seem to think that my pouch is spasming when liquid hits. They are setting me up with a prescription for something that should stop the pain, and the nausea that normally follows.
I knew today when I had only gotten that little bit of fluid in, that something was not right. I really hope this med works, and I can drink freely again.
Has anyone else ever had the same problem??

I have a sleeve stomach, but I had this same problem. I was doing well to get in 20-25 oz daily for a while, too. I could eat just fine, ate like a champ right from the start, but liquids were SO hard. For me, I could only handle a very small amount over a very long period of time. If I pushed it, it didn't hurt, it just came right back up and wasted the past hour or two's worth of work. According to my surgeon, it just happens to a certain small percentage of people. They told me all I could do was push to get in as much as possible, and come in for IV fluids 2-3X a week for as long as I needed to. For me, that ended up being weeks 3-6 post-op. For me, very very cold fluids went down best, followed by hot things like broth or tea. I couldn't do anything lukewarm or room temp. I couldn't do plain water, either- that didn't sit well until I was 8 weeks or so out. Slowly but surely, it did get easier. I still struggle a bit to get all my fluids in, but it's because I forget rather than I can't. I can easily get in 72+ oz now if I pay attention.
I believe that for me, it was a swelling issue. My body is VERY reactive, I have been told that I have a hyperactive histamine response, so I swell and turn red if you so much as scratch me. Because of that, I think I just had more swelling than most. I also had major acid issues immediately post-op, and I think that may have contributed as well. It might be helpful to look into an acid-reducer for a while, if you aren't already on one. Good luck, and I hope you find something that helps!
