Can't do ground beef or red meat
It's weird, my brother Kevin (who is 2 wks ahead of me) can do ground beef and red meat ok, I can't. I can do chicken, but he can't. I'm finding my diet to be pretty limited at this point. I seem to LOVE shrimp and can eat chicken, but I don't like tuna or fish(never have)
How long did it take some of you to tolerate somethings that you were unable to eat at first? Is it possible that I won't ever be able to eat ground beef or turkey? Cuz I'd like to at some point. I haven't tried anything with sugar (cookies, cake, candy etc) I have a feeling I'll dump huge, but I'm ok with that.
Can you please tell me what your experience has been? Oh I have to fix my ticker. I hit 65 lbs lost today . Woo Hoo!
So please share and tell me how you progressed as time went on. I'd sure appreciate the input.
Thanks,
Tess

I could eat ground super lean hamburger and turky/chicken pretty early out... My question is if you are keeping the ground meat moist after cooking it? If meat protein is not moist enough, even now at 9 mons out I can't tolerate it... no matter if its a chicken breast or ground meat...
Dry meat and our pouches do not mix... ha ha
BUT... I could not eat chicken in any other form till I was way out.. at least 6 mons... and I still have not tried steak.
I recently tried a baked pork chop that was in some sauce and it was moist enough for me to eat but a grilled one didn't go down. It's all about texture... You will be able to tolerate more foods over time... its just about trying them again...
I'm still totally a sugar dumper.. but also keep in mind you don't even want to "try" cake, candy, cookies, etc.... Thats just going right back to unhealthy habits we all had pre-surgery. Can I eat them? Yes... Do I choose to? No... and you'll learn your sugar limits on foods... I find that foods that are above my limit in sugar and are a carb (like a cookie) make me dump worse than others... You'll figure it out...

Tess,
I'm over 2 years out and still have problems with hamburger, so I have graound Turkey instead, like Turkey taco's, etc.....
There's a lot I couldn't eat or tolerate in the begininng and now I can....In time......
My advice for sugar, cookies, pizza, etc.....DON'T even try it.....I did and have gone back to some bad habits and have gained 15+ pounds.....STICK to the program, and you will be fine and successful.....I wish I would have NEVER tested the waters, because now I know I can eat almost anything......
Good luck, Kelly

I'm a little over a month ahead of you (11/19/09) and I haven't found a meat that I don't tolerate yet. What I do find is it all comes down to how things are prepared. I'm super sensitive to fat, or how much fat is in things, or how 'fatty' things are prepared. And I have a weird way of "dumping"; I just get super naseaus after just a couple bites, which is my indicator to stop what I'm eating cuz' it probably has too much fat or sugar (this only happens when eating out & I ask for things to be prepared healthy but they still may have used something that wasn't very low in fat). And if the meat is dry I have definitely gotten things stuck (which means a trip to the bathroom to get it out). So, for me it's not about any certain kind of meat but more how is that meat prepared.
Is the ground beef & turkey you buy the extra lean kind? Are you mixing it in with other things (like a sauce or a chili or something) so it's not dry? How did you feel when you ate these meats? Did it feel like they were getting stuck or did they make you sick? As you get farther out (from what I hear) somethings we can't eat now we may be able to tolerate later on. If these meats make you sick now I would just stick with the meats that do agree with you & maybe attempt these meats (beef & turkey) further down the road when your pouch may not be so 'sensitive'.
p.s.
One weird thing for me now is that I can't really handle garlic much anymore. Prior to surgery I would add garlic to anything, but now I can only have a very small amount in things otherwise it's too strong & makes me sick. Very strange & a little bit of a bummer cuz' I love garlic in lots of things. I'm hoping this will get better the farther out I get.

I don't have much advice to offer you on the food aversions...our surgeries are different and I haven't experienced those.
But I wanted to stop by and congratulate you on what you have achieved so far...65 pounds is absolutely wonderful!!! Congrats. Get ready for that number just to keep on going higher and the weight on the scale to go down. So fun!
Best wishes on finding some protein sources that will fuel your body & not make your pouch be a grouch!
