Anyone have trouble with Hypoglycemia?
The last few nights I have gotten extremely dizzy and then my hands sweat and I get ice cold. Scared the crud out of me! I've done some reading and it sounds like post RNY hypoglycemia.
I will call the WLS Clinic first thing Monday morning and ask them about this. I was not a diabetic prior to surgery just FYI.
I know I've read about some folks being dizzy. I have good blood preassure and take a small dose of bp meds (because of my heart attack in 07)
Just thought I'd ask. I probably need to look at eating 4 times a day instead of 3. I don't think I'm getting enough food or going too long between meals.
Thanks!
Tess

Tess, I am a type II diabetic and was on about 150 total units of insulin. I had to keep cutting my doses until I got down to NONE and that was presurgery, but on a very calorie restricted diet. I still am taking a couple of oral meds to keep my blood sugar under control.
So the word is that intake and exercise directly correlate (for me) the amount my diabetes is "under control." I was getting into hypo glycemia prior to getting off of insulin but a doing OK now with everything. Your body may not be used to lower blood sugar numbers and I don't know how low you are. Are you checking the actual blood sugars? You can get a reasonably priced unit at a local drug store or even Walmart. Test strip priced vary widely, so check out each brand to get one you can afford.
My experience is that with my normally high blood sugars, My body gave indications of Hypoglycemia even when my numbers would have been considered "high" in a non-diabetic. As I have lowered my overall numbers, I am getting less scary feelings with ever lowering average numbers (I.E. where I would get hypo reactions in the low 100's, I am now getting into the 70's without reactions.)
Low blood sugars are nothing to fool with, too low and a person can get into a coma. Check with a doctor and see where you are at and need to be!!

It's called reactive hypoglycemia and is actually rather common/normal in WLS patients. I've suffered from this for sometime and have several glucose monitors around for me (DH had diabetes and has his own monitors) and keep the glucose tablets in my glove compartment...just in case. I've learned to recognize my own signs and know which ones are more serious than the others. Typically though for me, I don't exhibit a reaction until my glucose is around 50, though it has gotten as low as 20 before. (THAT was a scary day!) The best tip I was given is that if you are starting to experience any symptom, or if you test and it shows your glucose is low, eat some protein immediately! A couple pieces of cheese, a piece of meat, handful or 2 of nuts, etc INSTEAD of eating a piece of candy or drinking some juice. The protien gets the blood sugar up quickly, but instead of a sharp drop again after it gets into and through your system like what happens w/sweets/juice, it stabilizes your blood sugar better until you can get something else to eat.
I try to eat bits of protien at specific times during the day now to avoid this problem, but it still gets me sometimes. (I'm good at forgetting to eat) You can see if your Dr or RD has any glucose monitors you can use, and try tracking your results for a period of time, several times a day at 1st if you can, and you may find a pattern. The only time I check now is when I notice my mouth getting dry and I know it shouldn't be, or when my hands are more shaky than usual. I also did a ton of research on it so that I knew what it was and what I was dealing with. GL!!!
