5 Miles to Nowhere
5 Miles to Nowhere
I have walked about 5 miles outdoors so far today; about half in my neighborhood before sunrise and the other half at lunchtime near where I work. The net result of both walks was that I returned to where I had started; in essence I walked 5 miles to nowhere. I suppose that sounds tedious or boring, but I thoroughly enjoy walking to keep myself in shape, even when it is over old, familiar ground. The seasons change, the weather varies, different dogs bark at me, my moods ebb and flow, my thoughts wander hither and yon, and the many colors I see in the sky continue to captivate me. This seemingly mundane habit of walking once or twice a day has helped me to lose and now maintain my weight, brought me closer to the outdoors, provided an opportunity for engaging in deep, uninterrupted thought, and delivered some measure of peace to my active and sometimes troubled mind. Maybe walking 5 miles to nowhere isn’t so boring after all.
