Prior to surgery weight loss?
I know you are required to lose weight prior to surgery. Is there a certain amount or percentage that has to be lost prior to it? Do your DR's help you with the weight loss or do they just tell you go lose it and come back when you have lost it? What if you don't succeed in it does that delay the WLS? So you can hold yourself back if you don;t lose it? I know these are alot of questions but if anyone has experinced any I would appreciate the feedback. thanks!!
Most surgeons typically require a pre-operative weight loss, which can rane anywhere from five to twenty percent of your excess, I believe. I can't give you an exact number because every surgeon is different and has their own requirements.
In my experience, the staff at my bariatric center were more than willing to help in any way possible. I was given a weight I had to get to before surgery, but I continued through the qualification process while I was losing weight, so I was meeting with my dieticians and continuing to meet with my nurse clinician. Tyically, you must lose the weight before your office will send in the paper work to authorize your surgery with insurance, so, yes, the WLS is hinged upon you losing the weight your surgeon sets for you before hand.
This is my experience, with my clinic, so you must bear in mind that this may not fit your experience. Each office is different and has different expectations and requirements.

Mine required a 10lb loss, it helps shrink the fat in the liver, which they need to work around to get to the stomach. They were very firm about it and made us weigh in before surgery to show we were there or no surgery. Every clinic is different.
It's in your best interest to do this, it shows them you are serious and can follow the rules. Hope this helps.
