One step forward, two steps back

I finally heard back from Southdale WLC, to say that I can set up my appointment with Dr. Laguna - next Tuesday to be exact.  So, I was starting to get all excited, when - oh, but there is a slight problem.  Your thyroid level came back low.  Your TSH  is lower than it should be, which could mean your thyroid is overactive.  We need you to see your primary doctor to have more testing done.  If it is a concern, we will have to hold off on setting a date.

Crap!  Really!  I've been jumping through hoops, exercising and dieting like a mad woman, seeing psychologists, gynecologic oncologists, and a blood level is going to put the brakes on?

So, I can see the surgeon, can send in my paperwork to insurance, but I can't set a surgery date until they figure out why my thyroid, which has always been normal, is out of whack.

I'm curious if thyroid testing can be off because of the diet and exercise?  I know that I've almost had to double my warfarin (blood thinner) because of all the exercise?

I see my primary on the 19th, and think happy thoughts.  I am starting to get so frustrated.  Every time things start to move in the process, something happens to throw me back a couple of steps.

Has anyone else ever had something similar happen?

I'd up that visit to your PCP so you can get on medication for your thyroid ASAP.  If you see Dr Laguna Tuesday, and lets say it takes 2 weeks for insurance approval, you won't have to wait but a week or two more to re-check your thyroid if your PCP will agree to recheck in a month.  That's not so bad, right?  If TSH is normal, you get your date.  Think positive.  Having said that, I have under-active thyroid and it can take a bit of medication adjusting to get into that normal range. Not sure if overactive is as hard to control.

The 19th of February is the first day my PCP has an opening.  I'm going to ask the nurses to see if they can get a message to him about getting it reran before my appointment at a different clinic.

My Mom is a retired nurse, and she said different labs can produce different results, or incorrect ones. Maybe the results are off, not me!!

Thanks for the pep talk and advice Kristy.  I'll try to stay positive.  I was really hoping for surgery before March 20th.  Otherwise it's too close to my daughter's birthday on April 7th.  There's no way I'm going to torture her by having a doped up Mom at her party!!  Which means waiting until almost the middle of April for surgery.  Bummer!

How old is your daughter?  I had surgery on 12/10 and my daughters 1st birthday party was 12/20.  Let other people help you with the party.  Unless you're doing something active you want/need to be more a participant in.

Hopefully the tests were just off & things turn out ok.  You'll see Dr. Laguna next Tuesday, get into your PCP next Friday, and hopefully find out your blood results the following week (or right away depending on your clinic) so that you can get some answers.

Who determines if it is a concern (your overactive thyroid)?  Your PCP or Dr. Laguna?  If the numbers are right are they thinking you would have to go on meds to help correct it?  Does it take long (on the meds) to correct something like this?  Do you know how low you are?

Thankfully it sounds like a lot of your questions will be answered soon & fingers crossed it all works in your favor.  Sending positive vibes your way & definitely keep me posted on what you find out!!

Thank you everyone for your support and positive thoughts.  I called my PCP's nurse line today, and they are going to put in a request to get my blood tests drawn before my appointment so that he will have the results when I see him next Friday.

Cross your fingers that he's willing to do this for me, otherwise I'm looking at least another week or two to get the results and diagnosis completed.

I hope when I do get the surgery, it goes smoother than the process to get approved.  I've had more ups and downs than I ever thought imaginable.

Kristy - My daughter will be 9 in April, and I already have everything planned.  We're doing Pump it Up, the cupcakes are ordered, the party bags are already purchased and filled.  Taylor's been having a hard time with her brother lately (ADHD, anxiety, and possibly ASD), and she's been embarrassed so many times that she's ended up in tears.  I really want this to be a good time for her, and if she's worrying about me, she won't. I also don't want to be all dopey on pain meds, because I already feel like I embarrass her because of my size.  I don't want her friends to see me as the drugged up fat lady!
