They tried to get my drainage tube out today and it wouldn't come out.  He left it unstitched and said I can either come in again in a couple days or pull it out myself.  It hurt like a sucker!  It's been in for almost 7 days...anyone else have problems with this?  I have daydream nightmares that they will have to surgicaly remove it !!!!

I am so sorry you are having issues with the drain tube.  My stuck slightly and it took a big tug to get it out.
Personally, I think the whole advice;  come back in a couple of days or pull it out yourself is about the worst patient care I have ever heard of?  I would have demanded some resolution before leaving.
Ok, so I am probably a little bias because I go to the same WL center, and have seen poor patient communications and am a little more than frustrated.
I hope they get it resolved and if I were you I would not pull it out yourself and walk right back in there sooner than later and  have them get it out!
Good luck!

Thanks Ranae!  I'm glad that someone else sees the same kind of issues.  I'm a little scared to go back because it really hurt!  Maybe I'll have to load up on pain meds before going in there.  I am really sore tonight after having it being tugged on.  Thanks for the advice!

Pull it out yourself?  Are they insane?  OH....I remember how it hurt when Barb from PNC yanked mine out, I feel for you!!!

Go back and demand they get it out - my god, that's their job, not yours.  And if you have pain meds, I'd throw some back before you go!

Good Luck!

OUCH!!!    I gotta believe there's another solution besides you going home & taking it out yourself.  I would definitely call back & tell them they need to try taking it out again & like you said I would think about heavily medicating myself as well to help with the pain since it doesn't sound like a fun situation what so ever.  I completely agree with the above poster too...doesn't seem like Fairview is dealing with the situation very well at all, with just giving up & having you leave after they couldn't get it out the 1st time.  If they were scheduled to get it out at your visit then why didn't they take it out?  Don't they have a follow-up plan for when it's stuck?  I can't imagine you're the only one who's ever had a problem with the drainage tube being stuck before?!?!

I hope it comes out much easier next time, or maybe just falls out on it's own at home for you.  Fingers crossed for much less discomfort for you next time!

Wow I find that very hard to believe................... I went through fairview and I thought they were great.  Never had any problems and they were always there for me.  Sorry they did that to you........I would go back today and demand they take care of you..............good luck to you and keep us posted..................

I agree....go in today and demand they remove it!! That is the craziest thing I have ever heard...take it out yourself...are they nuts!!

You don't need an infection from the darn thing on top of everything else.

That is pathetic.

Now is the time to call on your inner *****  Don't feel like a bother, don't tuck your tail between your legs, walk in there and tell them you're NOT LEAVING until they remove the tube SAFELY.  If the first person you see isn't comfortable with the difficulty they're having, insist that they call in someone else with more experience.

And request novacaine for the area if the pain is that bad.  Mine didn't really hurt, but was just a rather yukky sensation as I felt the length of the tube moving out.   Yup, novacaine or lidocaine might be good - at least for the point of entry/exit.

I have had great luck at Fairview WLS but it might be Pierce who is the issue.  I have not always heard good things about him.

You definitely need to get it taken out by them and you need to have someone else take you there so you can load up on pain meds.  Save that shot of Roxicette and then take it 15-20 minjutes before the great pull...

As for the removal, it is not painful so much as it feels like what you feel like when the wind get knocked out of you but only for the 3 seconds it takes to remove it.  It leaves you a bit woozy but it is not that bad.

You need to get it done by the doctor/PA...  Accept no substitute.

I'm shocked they told you to take it out yourself, or leave it a few days and come back. What, it's supposed to magically come out easier the longer it's in there? F  that!  It's only gonna get more adhered to whatever it sticks to the longer it's in there.

I would think they could/should give you a shot of local anesthesia before trying again if it was painful already and seriously stuck in there.  Keep us updated. Sorry you're not getting the care you deserve, that's ridiculous!
