Ambien after surgery?

OK, I admit it, I am hooked on Ambien.  They had me on it for months while I was in the hospital and I've taken it for over 2 yrs.  Kevin said they wouldn't let him have any.  Do any of you take Ambien?  Or a sleep aid?  How does it seem to affect you?

Thanks Tess

I took Ambien for years until I built up a tolerance to it. I haven't taken it since WLS. I take Seroquel now and it works splendidly!

I never took it before WLS, so I can't compare before and after.  However, I've had it from hospitalizations since then and it usually puts me out pretty quickly.  I don't take it reglarly, just if I can't get to sleep by 2am or so.  I don't have a regular Ambien prescription, but just what I have leftover from my hospital stay this summer.  I've found that Tylenol PM or even Benadryl works good, too.

Hey there, I take Ambien everynight.  I never had a problem with sleep before until my dad passed away in Jan 09.  I have taken it everynight since.  My brain doesn't shut off.  I need to be totally ready for bed because I am knoecked out 5-10 min after I take it.  I don't have any side affects just sometimes I don't remeber going to the bathroom or talking to my hubby.  Hope this helps........ Good Luck to ya...........

Thanks guys!  I appreciate your response.

Marsha - I have Dr Benn doing my surgery on 28 Dec.  How are you doing?
I bought 2 ornaments on EBay after taking my Ambien (before going to bed) and don't even remember it at all!  Good thing I didn't pay much.  Oopsie.

Yep, my worries/anxiety come at night and it helps me not lay awake all night long!

Tess....I took Ambien for a long time before WLS. After surgery I took it and did all kinds of things that I didn't remember doing. I got up in the morning and the cupboards would be open and stuff all over the counter. TV's left on..I was walking into walls too. I had the weirdest dreams...actually nightmares. Needless to say I don't take it anymore.

Good luck....be careful!

Hugs....connie d

I took Ambien for a about a year but I was getting "drunk" on it.  I would clean my house, write letters, make drunk phone calls, do all kinds of things I had no memory of.  Then I started going outside in my sleep and that was it I had to be taken off of it.  I miss it so much because I would sleep so well and not wake up drowsey (plus waking up to a clean house was a nice benefit).  I've had insomonia since I was 15 and have been on a sleep aid of some sort for the past 15 years.  I had taken Trazadone for about 13 years but built up a tolerance to it and was also really drowsey in the morning so I don't like that one.  Then switched to just taking 2 tylenol PM but there is a drug in there that I'm sensitive too that makes me have restless leg syndrome so now I take a very small dose of Klonopin (not sure if I spelled that right).  Its ok doesn't make me extremely sleepy just relaxed enough for my brain to shut off to sleep.  I get a little nervous about that one because you hear people get addicted to it I'd rather be on something that is less addictive but it seems to be the only one that doesn't have the side affects.

I haven taken Ambien off and on before and after surgery.  I know longer take it.  I didn't like the groggy feeling I had from it in the morning.  That not remembering of things.  I have had to learn to try to shut my mind off before going to bed.  I need to have a bit to unwind before heading to bed.
