Just starting...
Hi,
This is my first post on OH after lurking for well over a year or two. I'm maybe half of the way through all of my paperwork, nutritional appointments (BCBS), and other tests to get to scheduling my date.
I had my first appt with my surgeon last week (Dr. Drew) and really got a great feeling working with him. He really seemed to take the time to ask questions and walk me through RNY. My guess is that if I keep going down this path (honestly I'm a little freaked about having surgery as I've never had so much as a stitch put into me) I'll have surgery sometime this spring.
So... I guess I'm just posting to say 'hi' and introduce myself. :)

Welcome! There are a lot of amazing people on this forum who can offer you a wealth of info whenever you may need it.
I was quite freaked, as were many others I'm sure, but it's all worth it for the healthier, happier, more active life you'll be leading post-op. It's so nice to just have the surgery behind you so you can begin your 'new life'. But the great thing is you can use these next few months to get even more prepared & do even more research which will hopefully help calm your fears.
Hope to hear more from you in the future!!

Congrats on starting the process and welcome to the boards! This is a great place to get support!
I must have had your share of surgeries then, 'cuz I think I'm at 9 as of this summer. Not bragging, it's not a fun thing, but - from my perspective, it's just a bother. Not something to have a melt-down over. (I know, easy for me to say. One more and I think they'll install a permanent zipper in me.)
It's also a gift unlike any other. If you are MO and having health issues because of it, don't let a little fear get in the way of a chance at reclaiming the life you deserve!
GO FOR IT! And don't be a stranger - lots of good info, advice, experience and butt-kickings here for the taking

Imperfect does not = unsuccessful
Hi John - and let me say - good for you. I'm with the same doctor practice. I had Dr. Schwartz, Drew's partner. I think you are in good hands there. I had my surgery, but I do remember my first surgery years ago (gall bladder out in the late '80s) I was freaked out then, but like Darla, now I just see it as a bother. I've had several since then.
Keep coming to the boards, by the time you have surgery, you'll know a LOT. All the best!

I'm down 120 pounds - thanks to RNY! Working on the next 25. Then I'll tackle more...

Welcome John! I just had my surgery in October, while it wasn't my first surgery, I was quite freaked anyway..totally normal.
I also have/had BCBS (I'm switching to Health Partners on 01/01) so if you have any questions, or if you need to vent, feel free. I think I hit every single bump in the road with them!
Congrats on making this decision to change your life...hope to see you on the losers bench in the spring!

Wow, thanks everyone for the nice welcome!
It's really comforting to hear that 'freaking' is normal! :) I went in to get labs done this morning to check on all my levels (i.e. Vitamin D, lipids, etc.) soo... check that one off the list!
Sounds like I also need to get a cardiac screen before approval due to having PVC's (pre-ventricular contractions.) Cardiologists have always told me that they're just annoying, but it made me feel good that Dr. Drew wanted me to get screened anyway.
fun times!
