Kevin had surgery today - update

Hi, Tess (Vanish) here, Kevin's sister.  Kevin had a 1030am surgery today, it lasted almost 5 hours!  They started with a Lap and ended up opening him up.  It turns out that his organs are not where they should all be.  His appendix which should be in the lower right abdomen is up in his upper right chest etc.  He didn't want to run the chance of "running into something" since his organs were "turned sideways"  Leave it to Kevin to dare to be different.  Dr Benn said this is the first time all year that he's had to throw in the towel and doing it open.  However, other than that the surgery went very well and RNY was a success.

Kevin was really groggy and was having a lot of pain, but being a real trooper about it, I was really proud of him.  I go the chance to meet Dan and Stacy!  What a really nice surprise!  They were a wonderful surprise, thanks you guys!  Yes, I did call my Mother when I got home.

For you in the loop, our Mother's MRI Scan at Mayo today did not show any new cancer growths on the liver or anywhere else in the abdomen (she has stage 4 liver cancer) so we were elated to have that good news.  It's been a really long day.  Kevin will be in the hospital at least one additional night, then to my Parents for a couple of days.

I have my surgery 2 weeks from today   Watching today made me really just want to get it done with!

Kevin has so enjoyed the time he has spent at Saturday coffee with you all, I hope to be able to join him soon!

Good night!

Tess

Tess,

Thanks for the update!  I'm so glad to hear that Kevin's surgery was a success.  Although I've only met Kevin twice at coffee he seems to be quite a jokester so I'm sure he will turn his 5 hour surgery, with his organs in the wrong place, into quite a joke or story!

You should think about coming to coffee in Burnsville on Saturday to meet "the gang"!  I know it's quite a hike from your house but it would be fun to meet you.  It's so nice that the two of you have eachother for support while going through this process!  Good luck to you in two weeks as well.

Kristy

I had Kevin in my thoughts all day yesterday, so it's really good to know that even though it didn't turn out for the lap he still had a good surgery & he's doing ok.  I completely agree with Kristy; he is quite the jokester so I can definitely see him making a great joke out of all this once he's feeling up to it.  Please let him know I'm rooting for him to have a quick recovery & look forward to seeing him at an upcoming coffee, as soon as he's feeling up to it!!

And good luck to you in 2 weeks!  How exciting to be able to be there for your brother and then hopefully he in turn can be there for you in a couple weeks.  And you both will have each other to consult during your upcoming journey.

Thanks so much for posting about your mom too; I've been keeping her in my prayers and it's so good to know that the scan did not show any growths.

Keep us posted on how he's doing & I look forward to welcoming you to the losers bench in a couple weeks!!!

p.s.
Hope to meet you at an upcoming coffee sometime soon too!!

Thanks for the update.  Sounds like your family is going through some stress - bless you all!   I'm sorry that Kevin had to have open, but once it heals, it'll be just fine.   I bet that things go easier for you, Tess.  All the best.

I'm down 120 pounds - thanks to RNY!  Working on the next 25.  Then I'll tackle more...

Better to be safe than sorry!  Even tho lap is typically preferred, I figure a doctor can see what he's doing better if he/she goes in open!

Tell Kevin that I'm happy to have him on the other side - and that he should take it easy for a while, that's something to heal from!

Good luck to YOU in two weeks, and PRAISE GOD for good news for your mom!

I'm glad to hear he's doing well, even though the lap proceedure changed to open.  You'll be there soon!
