Six week check up
Hi everyone. I went today for my 5 week check up but it has been six weeks today so I am calling it my six week check up. I have lost 20 pounds since surgery (10/21/09). I have not been happy with the amount of weight loss, I expected more. The nurse told me when ones hgb was as low as mine I am lucky I lost weight. I still have an 11.2 hgb and will have to eat some liver!! mmm
The nurse also told me they expect around a 12 - 15 pound per month loss for a normal patient doing everything they should be doing. I felt so much better when I walked out of there because I thought I was going to fail with this surgery!! I did learn I need to split up my calcium more and get more water in. I should also pay attention to my portion size. I think I may be eating up to a fourth of a cup and they don't want that until 3 months out. So new things to work on!! But all in all I feel much better. Plus after all of this I got to see/feed/play with my grandson and he has such a good temperament.
Thanks everyone for all your posts here that help me make it through all of this!!

Hi, Donna.
Keep in mind that 20 pounds is still 20 pounds! WooHoo! The upside of slow weight loss is that your skin gets some time to adjust instead of just getting saggier. You may just be in a stall, too, an when that breaks the pounds will go again. I had 2 weeks in my first 6 with no loss; but then. . . off it came, and I know I was eating 1/4 cup by 6 weeks.
Anyway, all will be well and Donna will be losing!

DONNA, YOU ROCK!
20 lbs. is AWESOME! Sounds like you did get some positive feedback from the doc, and that's good! You have me worried tho, as I KNOW I am already at 1/4 cup at just 3 weeks out! I'm keeping my calories around 600. Did Dr. J say that's where you should be?
Can I ask what you're doing for exercise? I need to work on that too!!!
SO happy for you! Keep up the great work, as you're encouraging me to STICK WITH THE PLAN :o)
Hugs and blessings,
Shannon

Donna, 20 pounds in the right direction is 20 pounds to celebrate! Time is relative. I know someone who lost 20 in the first 8 days of his LD! But he is a DUDE, and dudes have more muscle mass than women, therefore burn fat faster, blah blah blah...
The bottom line is, do what you're supposed to do, and it will work.
As a reference to use or ignore as you choose - PNC has a rough guideline of 1/4 cup per meal by 3 months out, 1/2 cup by 6 months out, 3/4 cup by 9 months out, and 1-1.5 cups at a year + post op.
YAY YOU!!!
