Question about protien
I have a question about protien and if you can remember what you did shortly after your surgery.
I am having a hard time with protien-it makes my pouch hurt after I eat it...doesn't matter if it's chicken, pork, turkey or cottage cheese. I have yet to try beef because I heard it's harder to digest and I figure if I'm already having problems then I probably shouldn't pu****
I have tried cooking the above different ways (well, except for the cottage cheese)...crock pot, boiling, scrambled (eggs), over easy (eggs again), pulled pork, in stew, baked...I just can't figure it out.
I have noticed that my hair getting thinner in the upper back part of my head and I'm getting nervous about hair loss. I do still eat the protien because I know I need it but it is uncomfortable for me to do so and I have to admit I don't eat as much as I should because of that.
Also, could you recommend a protien suppliment that tastes decent (I have one at home that my husband bought and that stuff is NASTY) and is cost effective? Or that I can add into other foods to boost up the protien content in it.

Looks like you're just barely a month out, so I would guess that it WILL get better for you!
First thing, be SURE you chew the living daylights out of everything you put in your pouch! If it isn't applesauce consistancy when you swallow it, you swallowed too soon - CHEW MORE!
Another thing you can do to help is to use sauces and creams to help loosen up the protein - FF mayo with your tuna or eggs, BBQ or gravy with other meats - and YES, hold off on the beef for a while yet. Lots of people do find that to be the most difficult, although ham and white poultry were the worst for me. (I now eat thighs and drumsticks - used to think they were disgusting and greasy, but now I appreciate that they go down WAY better than white meat!)
You can also try taking Biotin as a supplement. Lots of people will tell you it doesn't help, but I believe it has helped me. I've taken it for years, as a thyroid problem caused my hair to thin out a long time ago. I take 5000 mcg/day, and my hair has come back in nice and surprisingly curly, plus my eyelashes used to be virtually non-existant - now they're not bad at all! What works for one, may or may not work for another, all you can do is try.
Good luck!

Imperfect does not = unsuccessful
My tastes changed for awhile after surgery....protein powder tasted like soap to me for about two months...yuk! It got better after that. For the last year I have been getting in extra protein by making a protein fiber bar that helps with protein intake and , um,....other challenges. I can post the recipe if you are interested. The protein powder taste is not very noticeable in that recipe.
Good luck,

Many of us spend an inordinate amount of time praying to the poop gods for blessed relief from the bricks stuck inside us. A couple of months ago I ran across a protein fiber bar recipe on a bodybuilding site and decided to adapt it for my own purposes. I use this as a meal replacement. I am a regular guy again when I have one of these every day.
3 cups dry old fashioned oatmeal
4 scoops vanilla protein powder
1/4 cup bran
1/4 cup golden flax seeds
1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
1 cup milk
1/2 cup creamy peanut butter (I have used PB2, but the bars don't stick together too well)
optional:
1/4 cup sesame seeds (Penzeys sells these in one lb bags for a reasonable price)
1/4 cup almonds and/or sunflower seeds
1/4 cup millet
mix together the dry ingredients first
add milk and PB, stir for two minutes
spread mixture out in 9 x 13 pan
sprinkle with Splenda
refrigerate
divide into 8 (you could adjust this too)
approx 325 calories/bar (more if you add nuts)
14 grams protein
10+ grams fiber
Update:
I now add 1 Tablespoon of cinnamon, 6 scoops (2 cups of protein powder), 1/2 cup of granulated Splenda, 1/2 cup sunflower seeds, and up to a cup of creamy peanut butter, but you should play with it until you like it. I have also used chocolate protein powder, some cocoa powder and no cinnamon, but I don't like it as much. Have fun with it!
