An Introduction and Thank you...

I just wanted to take a moment and introduce myself.  I have been a lurker here for a couple of months and I wanted to come out of the shadows to say thank you to all of you.  I have read your posts and even accidentally meeting a few of you (thanks Dan!) at a play but I have not said anything.

My name is Kevin.  I am having RNY Gastric Bypass with Paul Benn,,,  I am doing it in conjunction with my sister who is having the same surgery.  You will see here on here as vanish...  I have done all of the things except get the final approval from the insurance company.  That should not be a problem since, sadly. I am over-qualified!  I have sleep apnea and just got diagnosed as being diabetic so I have the co-morbidities and I have also been over 40 BMI for 5 years.  UGH!

I am excited, nervous, scared and ready to do this...  I have been looking at it for 5 years now and intensely the last 5 months.  I am ready to be healthy, happier and (dare I say it) cuter...  :-)

I am looking forward to going to the Saturday coffees...  I think "plugging in" to a network of like-minded people on the same journey will make all the difference.  The only times in my life when I really get into to trouble is when I "isolate" myself and don't go out or check-in with people...

I have seen a lot of people who have had this done with varying degrees of success.  It seems to me that the two most important things are exercise and not trying to negotiate the terms of surrender to this program.  It seems like those who "respect the pouch" make the biggest difference in their lives long term.  I think meetings will help keep me accountable and off the slippery slope.

Thanks for reading.  I look forward to moving to the other sie of the table soon.  My sister is scheduled for Dec 28 already.  I hope to do that day as well if the insurance minions would send the approval...

I look forward to getting to know you all in the coming weeks months and years.  :-)

Hey, welcome to the group.  How wonderful to go through RNY with your sister!

Glad you already met Dan. (He's the mean one of the bunch. The rest of us aren't so bad)

Hopefully you'll come to Burnsville or Eagan coffee sometime before your surgery.  I convinced myself to go about 6 months before I had surgery, and was SO happy I did.  It was a HUGE deal for me to go.  I'm such an introvert, going some place strange to meet strange people was really outside my comfort zone.   It was great to meet people face to face ahead of time, ask questions, and watch for myself as people were shrinking.  It's so inspirational.

I contemplated surgery for years too and finally had enough.  I really dug in to researching the options, hospitals and surgeons after attending an info session back around February08.  Congratulations on your decision to have surgery. You won't regret it.

Hi, Kevin.

Welcome and best wishes to you and to Vanish!  Do get as plugged in to a group as you can.  I've only been to a few, but there are different people each time.  The common theme is the welcoming attitude.
I'm sure it won't be long now before you are (dare I say it?) cuter!!

Love your signature line!

Congrats on your upcoming surgery Kevin!!  How exciting!

I agree with everyone above, finding a coffee meet-up to attend will be so helpful.  I wish I would've found this website & realized there were weekly coffee meet-ups sooner because I really enjoy going to them.  At least I was able to attend 2 meetups before my surgery (last Thursday) so I was able to ask everyone a lot of questions that were running through my head, meet other people that have both gone through the surgery and will be going through the surgery.  I found my 'angel' at a meetup and she helped me a lot by posting updated info for everyone while I was recovering in the hospital.  This site is amazing, as are the meetups.  Take advantage of all that you can both prior to and after surgery; it's wonderful to get to know others in the same situation as you!

I look forward to hearing more from you as it gets closer to your surgery & be sure to update all of us once you get a surgery date!!

Hey, I know this guy!  Hee Hee!  Bout time you got your butt on here!

Yes, we will go to coffee asap.  I'd really like that, I have to work it so I can sneak out (2 little ones at home, plus I live in way out)

It's been nice having Kevin on the journey with me because we can talk so candidly and kick each others butts when needed.  It'll be nice to have someone who has had surgery the same day so we can compare notes and say "do you feel this way too?"

Your cute now Kevin, but you will get even (dare I say it) cuter!  But I know you can do this and I'm even more sure we can do this together!  If we share a room in the hospital, I dibs the bed by the bathroom!

Love you,

Tess (Vanish)
