Mourning my inspiration

My best friend, Mimi, would have turned 24 today. She lost her battle with a rare and very nasty cancer that left her paralyzed. She died in 2005 at the age of 19.

We knew each other since I was in 3rd grade and she was in 2nd. I took care of Mimi almost daily until the day she died. We shared laughs, memories and in the end... I lost my closest friend. In return, I gained a new understanding of what it means to fight for my health. She wanted life so bad, but the cancer took her and crippled her from a happy, healthy girl.

She was the main reason I decided to finally do something about my weight. I knew that health was top priority above everything.

I rarely go visit her grave because I sit on it and cry... but today I will head out there to do just that. I'm a wreck and I know she's been here through everything.

This is what she looked like after cancer crippled her:

I hope she can see how far I've come and that  I have taken my health back.

What a great tribute to Mimi.  One can see the closeness you had.  Keep thinking of great things Elena.  I can see from your photos how far you have come in the weightloss battle.  Reading here on the boards of your personal struggles.  Here to support you and share your burden.  Looking great.

 Elena,

What an awesome post! Thank you so much for sharing your story of friendship.   Friendship is a wonderful thing and I am glad that you had the time with her that you did.  I obviously didn't know Mimi but your story is inspiring to me as well.  Life is good.

Hi, Elena.   I hope you have had a good day and were able to go out and communicate with Mimi.   Of course she is with you and watching you as you become healthier.   Our loved ones always surround us and watch from a different plane.   My mom drops a penny near me whenever I really need her.

The love and companionship show thru in each of these pics.  You must be so glad to have had this friendship!   But. . . what the hell were you to up to in the middle photo???

Bless you and all others who are missing your Mimi today.

I know we don't know each other very well, and what I'm about to say may be a bit presumptious, but someone once told me that those who have passed are with you not only in your heart bu****ching over you.  This same person also told me that when you are thinking of them and you are remembering the good times you've had with them it means that they are with you and laughing with you and remembering with you too.

So when you are thinking of Mimi, remember that she is with you and know that she is following you on your journey.  I'm sure she is so proud of you and what you have accomplished.
