Liquid Diet info??

Hi!
I'm thinking of going on a liquid diet (both to prep for surgery & cleanse my body).  I know there was just a post a few days back about the liquid diet but my question is what exactly did people eat/drink and at what times?  Was wondering if there's a website I could look at for a meal plan or a run down of what I should drink & when?  Or, if anyone could share with me what exactly they ate/drink and at what intervals that would be great.

I've heard it's kind of rough during the first few days but does it get easier after that?  Did anyone slip up at all & eat a little bit while doing their liquid diet and then go back to the liquid diet?  If you did, do you have to start all over or just continue on where you left off?  Also, does liquid diet mean only liquids or do you eat any blended or purreed foods?

Any help you could give me would be great!

Thanks!

I gotta say that for me the worst part was the pre liquid diet. Mine consisted of 5-6 protein drinks per day, broth (chicken or beef) and skim milk, water (propel or other low cal waters). That's it for 10 days before surgery. I did not cheat except the first night I was sooooo hungry and emotional that my Hubby felt bad and made me 1 scrambled egg. The nutritionist told me that I would be consuming about 1000 calories per day on the liquid diet. I used Carnation instant breakfast, Slim Fast and Ensure. The higher the protein the more filling it was. I truthfully was constantly hungry. I spoke with a support nurse and she said I could add sugar free jello. I would recommend not stretching your stomach out like I did before I had to start the liquid diet. I went a little nuts my last week of free eating and I think that was why I was so hungry. Live and learn I guess . Feel free to ask me anything!

www.bariatricdiet.com/pre-surgery.htm

That is a prepurchased program you can do that my dietitian gave me the info for.
Another option is to do optifast if you're looking for something prepackaged

The first few day suck.. then its easy.. at least for me. I did 3 shakes a day
breakfast shake
midmorning SF jello pudding w/protein powder added
lunch - chicken broth (was easier for me to drink broth at work w/o people asking question about why I was drinking a protein shake)
afternoon applesauce w/protein powder added
dinner - shake

I would flip flop the pudding or applesauce depending on the day

And yes I slipped here or there.. I think everyone does.. it was a few bites of this or that.. but it was always protein... we're only human. THe last 4 days I was stringent though, because I knew I had to clean out my system for the surgery. I never pigged out as a slip up, just a few bites of something...  I used the same foods as the above bariatric prepackaged diet..

Is your WLS office requiring you to do one or do you want to do it on your own?
I would ask your dietitian if you're going to do it on your own. I was REQUIRED to do a liquid diet pre-surgery.  I sat down wiht my dietitian and mapped out my own plan based off of the bariatricdiet.com diet with her... they really want to limit what and how much you eat pre-surgery..
ALOT of people find the prepackaged program alot easier to do.  Looking back it may have been easier for me too.. but what I did worked.. 11lbs lost presurgery in 10 days

Good luck!

The liquid diet is not actually required for my surgery (I only need to do it the day before my surgery) but I thought doing one would be good for not only helping me make sure I get down to the weight I need to get to for my pre-surgery class (need to be down 15 lbs. and I have about 4 more to go) plus it will be cleanse my body and help prepare me for what life may be like after surgery.

I know you stated that you added protein powder to the pudding & applesauce, did you buy any particular brand or where do you buy the protein powder?

You also stated you would have chicken broth; would you just buy the low sodium fat free kind & just heat it up from the can or would you make your own?

I worry my migraines are going to act up due to lack of food, but I think I want to give this a try because I think it will really help me cleanse my body out and hopefully get me to stop nibbling on 'bad foods' since I keep thinking "oh I better have a bit of this and a bit of that because after surgery I may never have this again".  Bad thinking I know, but it's also hard knowing that I may not eat some of these foods again, which I know I shouldn't be eating anyways, but to possibly be giving them up for good or for quite a long time makes me want to have them 'one last time'.  So I figure if I just cut the food out & go with the liquid diet for the remaining time before my surgery (or for most of the time before my surgery date on 11/19) I'll feel more prepared both mentally and physically by getting that 'bad food' out of me.

I'm also going to put a call into my dietician on Monday just to run things by her and get her opinion on what I'm eating/drinking and see if she has any other suggestions.  But, since I want to start the liquid diet this Sunday I thought I'd get some feedback from you guys to see how you guys did your liquid diets and I can incorporate those ideas for Sunday til' I talk to my dietician.

Thanks for your feedback ladies!!
