Sunday: How Are You Moving?
Despite the clock falling back last night, I couldn't sleep in, so I went on a walk shortly after dawn this morning. I walked down to a local lake and back which was about 2-1/2 miles altogether. Even though the thermometer registered a chilly 38 degrees, the wind wasn't blowing, it wasn't raining, and the sky wasn't all gray. It felt practically balmy. Whenever I walk to that lake I pause at the public boat landing to watch the water for a few moments. This morning it was dappled pink and blue, reflecting the sky on the easterm horizon. While I was standing there enjoying that peaceful vista, a large hawk swooped down and snatched something from the surface of the water. It broke my reverie and I turned to walk back home.
Later this morning my Dad and I are going up to his hunting camp to make sure everything is ready for next weekend's deer hunting opener. Traipsing through the woods has always been one of my favorite activites and even more so now that I am not carryng around an extra 150 lbs. Last year I didn't see any deer and got as cold as I have ever been in my adult life. Hope springs eternal, though, as the old saying goes, and I am looking forward to the November woods once again. The actual hunting part isn't as fulfilling to me as much as it is having time to think through things in my life, to come to terms with both my successes and my failures over the past years, and to observe close at hand the beauty and splendor of the outdoors.
