Protein Help
First, I want to thank everyone for your support when I was feeling sorry for myself earlier this week. I'm happy to report that my energy is slowly coming back, I made it through the week at work, and I'm feeling so much better. Its like night and day. Tuesday will only be two-weeks post-op too so I bet I'll be feeling 100% in no time.
Now, to my problem . . . . I've been told to shoot for 50-60 grams of protein a day. I went to GNC found this extreme protein powder that had 60 grams of protein in a single shake so I thought it was perfect - knock my whole day's requirement out with one shake for breakfast. Problem was it was HORRIBLE and I just could not stomach it. Yesterday without the shake, I only managed to get in 6 grams of protein (I'm basically living off applesauce right now).
Any recommendations for a good protein powder that isn't super gritty and taste horrible? There are a LOT of them out there, its hard to choose. The stuff I tried before was chocolate flavored. I think I like the idea of trying something flavorless that I could just throw into Gatorade or something without really noticing it. Does such a thing exist?

You must not dump from sugar? That would send me straight to the bathroom...

Order some samples... and figure out what you like best. Make sure you're using whey protein isolate -- which is not the case for a lot of those bullets and pre-made drinks.
Here are a bunch of places you can order samples from:
http://pouchiepoo.blogspot.com
You really can't go by anyone elses preferences -- your taste buds are unique.
The other thing to do is figure out how to mix them. Don't like them in water? Try mixing them with half water, half skim milkk or soy milk. Try using Diet v* splash, crystal light, SF pudding or Jello mixes for flavor, SF syrups, even coffee/decaf if you can have it.
My favorites are:
Decaf + soy milk + chocolate truffle or cookies &cream protein + SF hazelnut syrup
Diet V* splash tropical + isopure banana/pineapple/orange protein powder + 1 tsp SF Orange jello + dash coconut extract
PS: Do not fall for that 60g in one swwop thing... there is a lot of debate about how muh we can actually absorb in one sitting and 30-40g seems to be the common limit. You need to spread out your protein through the day.

Have you tried the sugar free carnation instant breakfast? Mixed in with an 8 oz glass of milk it's 13 g of protein and I really like it.
I use Isopure from GNC -mix 10 oz in my water bottle with 4 oz. apple juice and 4 oz water (or whatever fills it). That's 20 g of protein.
I agree with Miss Mary Mac - do it throughout the day for the best benefit! Also... try cottage cheese, if you can. And greek yogurt mixed with protein powder, SF applesauce, splenda and cinnamon. Mmmmm
Best of luck to you.

I'm down 120 pounds - thanks to RNY! Working on the next 25. Then I'll tackle more...

Oh, and by the way, I think if you have the GNC receipt they'll allow you to return your protein, even if you opened it and used a little.

This is true.. they will let you return or exchange. I bought a few things that I didn't like at all and exchanged them for other things or a different flavor. Vitamin Shoppe also lets you do this -- and they are usually cheaper and have a better variety of the good stuff.
Vitamin Shoppe will also order for you.... for instance, they sell the fruity Syntrax Nectars but I don't like those, I like the Nectar Chocoalte Truffle or Latte Cappuccino. They will order the flavor I want, pay the shipping and call you when it arrives :)

Try No Sugar Added Carnation Instant Breakfast in the blue box. If you can't handle regular skim milk now after surgery, try soy milk (Which I personally think is nasty) or try Lactaid - it tastes exactly like milk without the lactose.
You probably won't be able to get 60 grams of protein in 2 weeks out. It's just not possible. They want you to do the best you can.

I tried about 8 different protein powders(all sample sizes) and all different brands, flavors and sources(hemp, soy, dairy based) and even some pre-mixed drinks but each and every one of them made me feel ill.
I am now trying to get my protein from whole foods, which is fine, but when I'm watching calories it's tough.
Good luck.
