What's your opinion/ job-surgery
OK before you think you know the answer, please just let me fill you in on some small details.
Tues 10/13 -got layed off with 2 weeks extra pay. That ends 10/30
Sometime before Christmas I should be getting my RNY done. Lap assumably.
Unemployment pay will begin week of 11/2
Now, for 6 1/2 months I am covered by unemployment, but the economy can sometimes prevent jobs for longer. Right?
OK, I'm putting out resume's and am not faced yet with the choice of the job or the surgery. However, putting off my surgery date would be a major bummer if I got a job and they were not willing to start me after Jan 1.
I know I'm asking a lot, but I hope you all get my drift. I wonder if it is still of good proactive effort to look for a job though it may end up me telling them about the surgery (just that it is major and needs a healing time of at least 2 weeks) and my surgery date (which I will get very soon) and asking if they will hold the position or start me and let me go for 2-3 weeks, or ...the very last resort...put off my surgery and then they do without me for 2-3 weeks.
There are a few more scenarios, but I will leave them to your imagination and ask that you put yourself in my shoes and see what your thoughts would be. I would love your input.
Thanks all!

Tough questions are always the most interesting! If you are truly committed to the surgery, then you might not want to complicate matters by putting yourself in the position of having to choose between surgery and starting a new job. Recovery time for lap RNY is 2 -3 weeks (I used 3 weeks and I am glad I did so). If you have to have open RNY for some reason, you would be looking at up to 6 weeks recovery time. The other thing to consider is that a new employer may be reluctant to take someone on who has an impending major surgery that would occur just before or not to long after the job starts. Unemployment rules may have some bearing on things, too, if you are required to demonstrate that you have been looking for work when you are really waiting for surgery first. I don't envy you the tough spot you are in. I think you will have to pick either surgery or job hunting as your first priority and make subsequent decisions from that point of view.
Good luck!

I agree with you Rick. So, I am still looking and placing the results in God's hands. He opened the doors so far, and I can't believe He isn't with me through this. ![](http://images.obesityhelp.com/_shared/images/smiley/msn/batlashes.gif)
You are right about the unemployment rules, so there is another point towards keeping looking. It's hard to make anything but the surgery first priority in my opinion. You know what I mean? But I'm plugging along.
Thanks for responding, guy!
Keep up the good work of introspection, but push your vision outward and continue doing for others. That is a real pick me up....as you may know from your encouraging entries here.
God bless you!

Moving the surgery up is a great idea. My thoughts are get it done with and get on my way to my new life. I have to wait until the second week of November to get my surgeon appt then I'll get my date, so.... it could be earlier, but I need to factor in 10 day liquid diet preop.
Thanks for replying!
You look wonderful!
My entire dept was layed off in May. The last thing my boss said to each of us (8 people, 7 over 50) was, "Lose 20 pounds, whiten your teeth and make sure all your shoes are polished and in good shape". I laughed at the time, but went to Mexico within 30 days to have my open RNY. I have used unemployment time to recover and look for work. No accounting job on the horizon, but I do believe I will present myself better after losing 60 pounds and whitening my darn teeth!
I agree that prospective employers may not want to hire you knowing you have surgery looming ahead. I'm no expert, but I'd say take this time to work on you and FOR you!
Best of luck in whatever you decide to do.

I have 2 cents to put in... and you can take it for what it's worth... 2 cents! LOL!
I work for a company that has been laying off people... I was supposed to get laid off on May 1st, got extended till October 1st, then got extended again till Dec 1 and now have been extended one more time (and final if I have anything to say about it) till Dec 31st. With that being said, I was one of the lucky ones to get to stay. I know alot of people who were laid off on May 1st and have just found jobs now. I do live in out state MN so it may be different for you in the cities, but you may want to start looking now and if something comes up before your surgery date, decide at that time what to do.
The other thing to consider is that with the state of the economy and the unemployment rates, they have made it easier to extend your unemployment. When I do get laid off I plan on going back to school and I know that when you do that, your unemployment will cover you for almost 18 months. Without going back to school though I know they have made it much easier to get extended for at least another 6 months. So that would make it a year to be on it.
As far as your qualifications for staying on unemployment, you have to usually show that you are actively looking for work. That can be done by just sending in resumes for jobs that you are not qualified for if you want to wait till after your surgery.
I agree with some of the others though... talk to your surgeons office... they may be able to move your consult up so you can get back to job hunting sooner!
Take care and good luck!
