People who have gone to Clothes Mentor - I have a ?

Am bringing some stuff today to the new Burnsville store. I guess they're taking things in now, but not opening to shop til November.  How do they pay?  Do they sell the item for 1/2 and then give you 1/2 or 1/3 of that? Is it the same calculation whether clothes, shoes, or purse?  I know they're picky so I'll be interested to see what they take. I'm not going with much this first time.

They give you cash on the spot.  It isn't much, but its better than nothing.  I don't know what calculation they use.  A designer purse or jacket gets you more than say, a sweater, but it all depends on the condition and what they need the most.

I usually go to the Clothes Mentor in Maple Grove, but have also been to the one in Minnetonka.  What they take really depends on the store, and the person looking at your stuff.  I had one person decline some of my Calvin Klein and Columbia items, but I took them back on the weekend and a different person accepted them.  I have also bought things there that they wouldn't buy back when I took them back in later.  Go figure.

The store in Maple Grove seems to accept more brands than the one in Minnetonka.  (Just an observation from looking at the clothes they have in stock, so it may not be accurate.)

I probably won't go out of my way to take things in for cash anymore.  But, it's fun to shop there and you really can get some great deals.

Just my humble opinion!

Thanks BJ.  I was assuming they worked the same as Once Upon A Child where they use a calculation.  I've heard the same thing from other people who bring kid clothes there, where if one store doesn't take some stuff, another will.

You don't get paid much for what you bring, and it's not really a calculation.  It's very subjective - it depends on which employee takes your stuff.   I've found that donating my stuff to charity is a lot better for me financially because I get a tax credit for it.  I don't know where you live, but there's a consignment store in downtown Chaska (I forgot the name but it's a consignment store and a store that sells ballet/dancewear) and she has given me a lot more for my stuff, but you don't get paid until your stuff sells.  If you go there, you usually have to make an appt. for her to look at your stuff.

Hi Renee- I usually sell my good, almost new stuff on Ebay, but I wanted another option so I don't have to mess with auctions and shipping. I'll be interested to see how much they pay. I suppose I should look at the IRS info as far as how much you can claim per item when donating to see if I'm better off doing that.

I just went to the Roseville store yesterday.  They took a bunch of stuff and I received $32 for them.  I brought about 30 items and I bet they accepted about 10 items.  They were very picky about any discoloration or age of the item.  If the label had been updated on the item, they rejected it even though it was in perfect condition.  They rejected a JJill velvet topper that was less than a year old because cordoroy or velvet doesn't sell...??  Not sure if I'll bother again.  I do better with garage sales and then donating the remaining....

What a lame comment about the J.Jill velvet top.  I love J.Jill stuff.  Have quite a few things from them in the basement I need to get cleaned up and then sell ON EBAY. :-)

They are picky about being in style and current clothing.. and NAME BRAND. They bought almost all of my Lane Bryant clothes... but the un-named plus size clothing they didn't even want. They give you 1/3 of what they will sell it for.  They bought about 10 Lane Bryant shirts/pants from me and I only got $30.. yah $30 is $30 bucks but I bet I spent at least $30 on each item...

They are very stuck on name brands.. AND both times I've gone they told me come back in X amount of hours, and both times I got there and they weren't even done and quick skidaddled to do mine)... So while I waited I went through the clothes they had for sale.. Nice stuff, mostly name/high end... decent priced, but killed me to know how little they actually paid me for my stuff.

I brought 6 pairs of shoes, all NEW, never worn. All leather. They wanted 2 and and offered me $6.80. TOTAL.  WTF?!  Um - no thanks.  My mom had a bunch of Coldwater Creek stuff, all really nice, perfect condition, maybe worn once or twice. They didn't want any of it because the label was over 2 years old. Good greif!  They're wacked!  I asked how they know how old something is, and they said they have a label guide with pictures.

On the spot.... 30% of the price or so... nothing big but it's something. I like consignment better... more money, though there is a wait for the money.
