Chocolate Whey Protein Powder

Went to the store and bought chocolate whey powder to try out before surgery.  You know, see what I might like.  I brought it home and immediately made myself a glass of milk with the powder.  Mixed it up really well and tried to down it like I do chocolate milk.    Um, not so much.  It didn't mix well so there were lots of little clumps of the mix in it so it made me slow down to drink it and ...  I wasn't a happy camper.

Any suggestions out there???

Hi Teresa.

I am in the same boat as you... do NOT like the protein powder with just cold milk and KNOW I need to be able to stomach it for after surgery.

The type I tied is just the chocolate Body Fortress from WalMart... $11 a tub right now, and I was really surprised that by mixing it COLD with enough skim milk to break it down and then pouring really hot coffee to fill the cup and stirring was REALLY good and tasted like HOT CHOCOLATE. I did add a shot of Torani carmel syrup and it was great.

I can't drink the stuff straight with milk OR water! I also find it's best to mix the chocolate into plain cream of wheat. Using the blender with ice and milk and a shot of a good syrup also helps.

Hope this gives you some ideas! Otherwise over on the main RNY board eggface and cleopatra_nik have some great shake recipes!

Ya that really surprised me.  Ya and I know we need it too.  err!  That type you described was the one I bought.  I thought, 11 bucks?  Why not.  Have you tried the strawberry?

Coffee?  Mmmm..but can we have that after surgery?  Hmmm.

Water....leave well enought alone  Ha ha !  Don't mess with my water.  But great to know there is someone out there trying this stuff too!

Thanks Shannon!

I've tried the Strawberry and prefer the Chocolate.  The one thing I found that it was way better after I bought the shaker that is right with the protein powder.  It makes it seem much more  like Chocolate milk.  I was starting to gag on the lumps before I bought the shaker.  I also tried to make it in my Magic Bullet - skim milk + powder and it was way to foamy, full of air so to speak.  It was very hard to drink that way.

Hope that helps you a little.

I've been putting a big scoop of it in my Cream of Wheat to make "Malto Meal!" - and its good! An easy way to get a little in at a time.  Also, the EAS advantage protein drinks are good on ice. That's another way to get that protein in and fee like you're having a treat!

I've used the Body Fortress, because my clinic recommended it as an option and it was reasonable in cost.  I used an immersion blender and that worked great!  Mixed it well.  My husband adds ice cubes to his and drinks it like a milkshake.  I can tolerate it.

Just a thought... back in the days when I was doing the SlimFast powder, I had the same lump issue.  I found that if I mixed up a large batch of it (1/2 gallon?) at a time and left it in the fridge for a while before I drank it, it blended in MUCH better - just give the jug a good shake, pour a glass and bada bing!

Maybe that would help with the protein powders as well???
