3 weeks out and discouraged
Hey guys,
I had my RNY with Ikramuddin on 9/23 so am now three weeks out. I hop on the scales every few days just to get a reading and I'm completely discouraged.
I am about 3lbs down from my surgery weight!
No...it's not retaining fluids, I'm young, had surgeries before and I'm up and about active and the 'fluid' issues should have resolved themselves by now.
The dietician put me on a soft diet. I am following their guidelines closely, am eating as much protein as I can within the 3 meals + 1 snack, drinking 64 oz of calorie free liquids per day and walking at least 45mins a day.
I tried about 7-8 different protien powders, ranging from the traditional to the pre-digested hemp and some premade low cal high protein drinks, all of which seemed to make me nauseated. I decided to drink skim milk twice a day this past week, which is actually quite nice, and gives me 16g of protein a day on top of my staple of cottage cheese, yoghurt, tuna, tofu etc.
I called the dietician today and asked what on earth is going on....she bumbled and mumbled and wasnt able to give me any clear answers...she told me to drop the skim milk and try a scoop of fat free milk powder mixed with ground beef instead...wow..that sounded like such an awesome solutiion. Sorry sarcasm reigns supreme right now.
I've called only twice since surgery and find that the 'support staff' aren't really that supportive, nor can they offer clear ideas or helpful advice about how to proceed. I am beginning to feel like a cow at a factory farm.
Did anyone else not lose any weight in the first 3 weeks or so and if so, how on earth do I restart my metabolism to understand it needs to let go.
I'm keeping all foods as low calorie as possible, I even made a joke about the 'bass-o-matic'(SNL), but now I'm getting so freaked out I feel like I'd have to stop eating entirely for anything to happen...which is obviously not the right choice.
I'm just surprised by the lack of assistance from the 'team' at Ikramuddins office.

Okay, let's stop & take a calming breath. Put your scale away and only measure one day per week. You haven't said if you noticed your body feeling different or your clothes fitting different.
There are two ways things go. You step on the scale & lose pounds. Sometimes you step on the scale and there is no movement (I'm 20 weeks out & just had a 3 1/2 week stall where my scale didn't budge). However, often times if your scale is not moving your body is shifting weight around. Sure, you've lost the fluid weight but your body is still healing. I was annoyed that it didn't just burn off right away, too. It all takes time. It's hard to be patient with your body. Just wait until your hair stars falling out!!

Ha! I know...perspective. The girl that cuts my hair says I could use to lose some, I'm sure I wont feel that way when the time comes though! I lost hair when my thyroid went wacko a year ago...thankfully it stopped, and most of it grew back.
I just talked with Dr I's nurse, she seemed waaaaaaay more able to discuss this properly.
Next week is my one month visit and she said they will run some additional tests then.
Apparently I am doing everything correctly, my food choices are good, I can keep the skim milk, and my 'sources of protein' are awesome...lentils, quorn, tofu, beans, beef etc.
I just have to stop stressing so much

DEFINITELY stop stressing over it. Stressing isn't good for anything.
Just keep doing what you are supposed to be doing, especially the protein and liquids, which it sounds like you are. And don't forget your daily vitamins and supplements.
Your body is in shock - from the surgery, and from the (probable) sudden change in your eating habits, so it could be holding on to what it's got for dear life. But it WILL adjust, learn to trust that you aren't trying to kill yourself, and let go of the excess.
I would also guess, based on your overall "mood" (?), that you are definitely spilling hormones, which are stored in fat.
Just keep on keepin' on. And be SURE to post once the weight starts to fall off, k?

Imperfect does not = unsuccessful
Not to be too gross, but your bowels refill very slowly at the soft food stage you are in right now, so you might not show much movement on the scale as you become more full of _____. One thing I found useful was to take measurements once every week or two for the first few months...it provided reassurance to me when the scale seemed to be stuck. Don't stop eating! That will only make things worse as your metabolism goes further into starvation mode. Your post doesn't measure exercise, but even a little bit of that can get you rmetabolism going. I started out walking a half a block at a time, which eventually developed into a regular habit of walking several miles a day.
Good luck and keep your chin up! Working your program will produce results in time.
