Imagine

“You may say that I’m a dreamer, but I’m not the only one."  I love those words from John Lennon because they validate those of us who are dreamers.  My 21 year old son was singing “Imagine" as he walked around the house last night and it got me to thinking about what some of my dreams are and how weight loss surgery has made them more possible.  I have always been a dreamer, imagining a broad spectrum of possibilities, not so much about material wealth or having power over others, but of living my days gently and sweetly amidst the bounty of nature and the people I care about, with a bit of self-propelled travel thrown in from time to time.  When I was bigger, I could only dream about living closer to the land or moving any significant distance under my own power.  Now, as a thinner, healthier man, it is in the realm of possibility to pursue those dreams, so long as I don’t overlook practical matters altogether.

Among such practical matters is that, unless you are willing to live a very demanding life in a far flung wilderness area with no access to health care or other human beings, you need at least some income to support yourself.  In that regard, I again find myself thinking back to my youthful dreams of what I might do for a living when I grew up.  Some might argue that I have never really grown up, but in my secret heart of hearts, I have always wanted to be someone who inspires and comforts others by helping them to believe in themselves.  At this point in my life, writing seems to be the best venue for doing that.  So, a bit of writing and  perhaps some consulting work in the renewable energy field (so as not to waste the professional experience I have had over the past 25 years) strike me as being the most promising means of supporting myself if I choose to follow my dreams.

The other substantive practical matter is assessing whether the other people in your life are willing to share or at least be accepting of your dreams.  I am still working on that, but I remain hopeful and, one might say, persistent.

What is in your heart of hearts and in your dreams about what you can do with your life after weight loss surgery....especially if you cast practical matters aside?

If I had to pay you for how much your words have helped me along my journey you would be a rich man!! That's good for me that I have been able to receive some absolutely wonderful therapy for free, but a bummer for you,  I know if given the opportunity you would be a very successful,  highly in demand, "helper of people" of some sorts!! Keep dreaming, it will come!!

This has been the best decision besides marriage and kids that I have ever made!!
