My first day home post surgery
I had a 'text book' surgery per Dr. Pierce (cutey that he is). But this drain thing and the liquid vicodin is horrid. And it's rainy and cold out so I can only walk around my living room (my dogs think I'm nuts!). I haven't tossed my liquids yet and have this crazy feeling I won't because - well because I hate to throw up so much!
The menu list isn't very long this week. I'm not hungry at all but I can't tell if the full feeling I have is full because I"m still so swollen in my belly area or because I'm full from my 1/4 cup cream of wheat. I think about food all the time - mostly because I have these momentary lapses in memory that I had surgery then I say "Um - yes, that commercial sounds good but you can't do that yet" - I feel a little sad.
Nothing tastes good. Is that normal?

Hey, I'm just a week earlier than you! I was on clear liquids the entire first week which stunk! Are you tolerating the cream of wheat? I haven't tried it yet. I have only been on pureed/soft foods for the last couple of days and already I'm bored with cottage cheese and yoghurt!
I also have made the mistake of stepping on the scale...I'm 11 days post op and the weight is NOT falling off like everyone said it would and I'm completely bummed. I'm following the plan to the tee but it's still frustrating.
I think things begin to look brighter at month 1 onwards....
yeah, and I'm with you on the thinking about food....I miss sharing dinners with my family, at this stage of the game it's just too hard to sit down with them, so I keep busy while they munch on all the yummy 'Pioneer Woman' recipes I still love to make them. Sad thing is my 2 year old eats about 10x what I consume per day.
and you're right...nothing tastes very nice just yet...especially not the gallbladder meds - uck!
right there with ya buddy!

Congrats!
You will not feel hungry... possibly for a LONG time. Some poeple it returns sooner than others.. I'm at almost 4 mons and only feel "hungry" when I miss a meal.. then I feel it but its still not a traditional "hungry" feeling like pre-op.
Also you will not feel full.. for a long time possibly too. Your tummy has been re-routed and your nerves that made us feel "full" pre op are all screwed up... Do not rely on feeling full at this point of the journey. Keep your portions to no more than 1/4 cup... your staple line post surgery is only 20% strength and thats why they put us on a liquid/puree/soft food stage for so long. we have to heal that staple line! You don't want to stretch your new pouch with more than 1/4 cup yet. I ate a few tablespoons-1/4 cup post op depending on the food.
It is a struggle at first to see the commercials.. it even is now. I was so fixated on food pre-op.. but through this journey I am no longer fixated on food and my RNY helped me do that.
I definitely went through a food mourning period.... most of us did. Its completely normal...
Ask us anything if you need to! It's why we're here!

Cutie is right!!!
Glad you're doing well. If you're still needing the pain medicine and can't stand the liquid, call and ask for the pill form instead. That's what I did. The liquid made me gag.

I am doing a little better today but only after I agreed to take the liquid Vicodin. I really don't like the taste and it makes me woozie - but without it I'm a lethargic log of pain!
I'm missing food a little - trying to imagine what this cream soup/cream of wheat/yogurt life will be like for 2 full weeks. I'm not sure the NOT hungry part will ever help me - I never ate because I was hungry. I haven't had that "so full I"m going to throw up" feeling yet - but not sure I could on 1/4 cups of cream soup. I'm not a big yogurt fan but am working in little bits.
I'm starting to feel afraid I can't do this. I'm not giving up - and I know I've been given this opportunity and I'm not going to ruin it. But I was hoping like someone said that the commercials wouldn't get to me...or the smells of food. But I keep telling myself it's not that I'm never going to eat it ever again, but this will lead to a new me. A me that can say no to seconds, and be happy with a bite of this or that.
This definitely isn't the easy way out. It's really hard work - the hardest work I've ever done for myself.
My dogs love this little drain pouch - they think it's a squeeky toy I think. I have to watch them like a hawk!

Oh, and the gas is REALLY painful. I never thought I'd be so happy that I burped and passed a little gas -Women have been holding in gas for 2,000 years - it took some coaxing but I've done it a few times now. Good thing nobody is around!
Only you guys can relate to what I'm saying here so I thought I'd share! LOL
