HELP PLZ - Questions for Lapbanders

I have a friend who was considering getting LAPBAND surgery, however, he ran into a snag.  So I have some questions for anyone who had this surgery:

1) Did they make you take the sleep apnea test?
2) Are you allowed any carbonated bevs after?

I had an RNY and did not need a sleep apnea test. Maybe it was just the place he was checking.

Thanks for any help!

The decision to do a sleep test is not based on the type of surgery.  If there is a reason to conduct the test that will be a decision of the surgical team and/or primary and/or the patient.  The results could assist the insurance company in their decision as to coverage as sleep apnea is considered a  comorbidite.

As far as carbonated beverages, the general consensus on this board is why bother...there are many things that are better to drink.  My personal view is that you take all things in moderation.  I drink carbonated bevs...just not very fast and I prefer them on the flat side.  They do cause hic-ups easily and I'm not talking about the little girly hicups either.  There is a belief amongst some that carbonation can jepoardize the pouch.  My nut says it can't.  My surgeon says it can't.  If it were easily damaged by carbonation we would all be in serious trouble.

I am not trying to start a debate.  Just the bottom line is everyone has rules that they follow.  You will (or your friend will) eventually create your own rules to follow based on many things...your body, your doctor, your goals, your support, your prefrences, your determination, etc.  It all comes together to help you succeed.  Everyone's rules are different so I cannot tell you your friend will be allowed anything.  Chances are he can drink a diet pepsi but cannot eat rice.  Or he can't drink diet pepsi but occasionally a light beer or wine is fine.

The road is long, with many a winding turn.

Thank you Paul and everyone who answered me so far. This is what I thought too.  I wasn't sure though, since I had an RNY.  Best wishes to all!

I agree with what Paul said on both topics. I did not have to have the sleep test because I didn't need it. I have not drank carbonated liquids for over 3 years (except the occational Bacardi Diet Coke). I think anything can be eaten or drank in moderation, I just choose not to drink pop.
