New Food Issues

So I figured that this 2nd RNY surgery would be a complete breeze because I knew what to expect coming into it having been through it once before, right?

WRONG. My new surgeon's program is very different than PNC. Basically they just say after the first 2 weeks, eat whatever you want (other than the solid meats) and you can eat until you're not hungry (basically telling us to listen to our bodies). Well dammit, I seem to keep either eating too much or eating the wrong things? It's funny that things I was able to eat before right after surgery has changed.  I'm a bit lost. Food doesn't taste as good as it used to. I don't seem to eat very much (well DUH, right???) at one sitting, and it's just unappealing all together.

Am I just going through the grumps now because I've lost 15-20 pounds since surgery and am getting the estrogen pump? Did I overestimate my abilities for being able to try to figure out what and how much I can eat? I kind of feel alone - you know? I go back to the Dr. next Monday for a checkup before going back to work, but I just feel like I have no direction.

Does any of this make sense?

Farrah,

Like you I thought this would be a breeze following my revision. It wasn't and it isn't. I will never rely on my feeling satisfied, because too many things interupt...delay...short-circuit those signals. It doesn't matter what the surgeon's system is regarding food (and given that it is more relaxed) you need to do what works. You know your body, so do what worked for you from PNC. I can not rely on my eyes so I measure my food. I start with 1/2 cup and add a 1/4 cup if i want a bit more. I have to supplement with protein shakes every day to get in adequate protein due to malabsorption. When I eat out, I always get a to-go bo and box up the majority of my meal before I take even one bite.

You can do this...you can do hard things!

Thank God I'm not the only one that thought like this. OK, I'm going to go ahead and try to remember the PNC program the best I can and see if that works for me better. I'm sick of throwing up. UGH!

Another thought, you're fresher out of surgery than I am - although I didn't have any kind of revision, it took me a good 4 weeks to get ANY kind of "appetite" back.  (I almost swore Jones DID do a revision on me!)

I say "appetite" because I have never felt the sensation of "hunger" since my RNY.  While I was at home recovering, I simply had NO DESIRE to eat whatsoever - I just ate a few bites, a few times a day, because I knew I had to in order to heal.   Just do what Cheryl said, go back to PNC basics, and pretend you're a newbie to WLS altogether, not an "old timer" having to re-learn.

And I'd be willing to bet if you contacted PNC, they'd be happy to send you out the booklet all the newbies get!  (They've revised it in the past year).

Good luck to you!!
