last minute freak out before surgery!(girl parts mentioned)
ugh...I am having last minute jitters regarding my surgery on Wednesday. I'm absolutely terrified about the bowel prep as I tend to faint whenever I have had severe diarhea(I know TMI), and God knows, noone wants to wake up in a pool of....well, you get where I'm heading with this!
Also...I've been getting input from my sister and friends who have had RNY and 2 out of three tell me that my period might come early, as in the day after surgery due to anesthesia. I'm due the week after surgery but this makes me worried as I have a history of very painful periods and have always taken high strength naproxen (a major no-no post RNY)
I cna't seem to find any REAL information out there about this, so I thougt I'd ask some of you BTDT people....help eeek!
I've also been struggling with losing the last 7 pounds....I did the two slimfasts + 1 kashi meal each day for the past week and stayed to it RELIGIOUSLY but stayed the same on the scale(welcome to my world of diets)...the weight check on Friday was met with the response that I will lose the weight before wednesday, but I'm not so sure. I was put on three slimfasts a day + 1 apple...can anyone say YUM! That apple tasted so good...seriously!
have I mentioned I'm terrified about the bowel prep! My husband is staying home to look after our 2 & 4 year old. I wasn't really told at the info meeting that it would be THAT BAD, but I keep hearing that it is pretty awful and you spend the entire day on the loo!
I just need some reassurance.
Also, I'm not having doubts about the surgeon, but the support staff worry me a little, I was the one 'who fell through the cracks'(verbatim) over a few things, and when that happens it kind of sets me off on the 2.10 to worryville.

what bowel prep are they having you do?
If you are concerned about the weight you have left to lose, then ditch any solid food and just do 3 or 4 protein shakes a day... I would go out and buy some protein isolate powder and do real protein shakes instead of slimfast if you truely want to drop the weight you need to...
I did the magnesium citrate bowel prep and it was not that big of a deal... Less than I expected it to be! I drank it, let it do its magic... and then I had gut gurgles and new it was time.. and just went... ya it lasts a couple of hours.. but its not like you're going to wake up in a pool of poo like you said girl! Nothing like that!
And you'll know when its done... its just done.. no more gurgles.. no more poo... I know everyone is different though...
Period- I actually didn't get mine like normal.. or like everyone said I would.. I actually skipped my period post surgery. But its very common for women to get their period a day or two after surgery. Some get a light one, some get a heavier/worse than normal one...
Believe me, I've been through it... its all worth it in the end!
Stay strong and just keep your mind on the prize...

Hang in there. These are exciting, terrifying days. And will pass faster than you can imagine.
The bowel prep I experienced was the same as Stacey. I took the magnesium citrate at about 4 in the afternoon. Drank a bunch of water. Was able to make it to the bathroom as needed. I didn't have any blowouts, so it wasn't as bad as I had expected. It was over by 8 p.m.
My period was to start two weeks after surgery and it didn't start early. So there is always the chance that you won't have it right away as you fear. Cup half full in my world!
Tylenol has worked well for cramps. I was an Advil girl and was afraid that it wouldn't measure up. I take 1000 mg (two extra strength) Tylenol.
Congratualtions on taking care of yourself. The journey is a roller coaster of emotions and wow moments. Now it's your turn! Best of luck to you and yours.

Hi Hayley, You will get through the bowel prep, no problem, just like Stacy replied. As for the peroid, sometimes anesthesia does throw a girls cycles off whack, bring some pads with you to the hospital, your post op pain meds will take care of the discomfort issues from surgery and cramps if they are present. Got to switch to tylenol for cramps after surgery. I am a little older, going through menopause, hadn't had a peroid for almost 2 years and got one 3 days after surgery, after I was home again. No big deal. Just another fact of life. Good luck with getting everything ready and getting to surgery. Hugs, Kathy

Hayley,
Everything will be fine, Pain meds for your surgery will take care of any period pain IF you get yours. I've been through many surgeries and have never gotten my period from it...everyone is different.
As for the bowel prep --NO SWEAT been doing those for years too. (I' have to get regular colonoscopies (not RNY related). You have been doing a modified liquid-ish diet so you won't have a lot to empty out of your bowels. It will be more like gurgles and then "peeing" out of the wrong end, LOL.
Drink a TON of water the next few days, and like Stacy suggested, switch to a protein isolate powder for your shakes, with NO solid foods and you will loose those last few pounds. They were having a sale at WalMart on Body Fortress Whey Protein. ($11.97) It comes in Chocolate, vanilla, cookies, and cream, and I think strawberry. I like them all, and I still drink at least on shake a day.
If you want a ready-to-drink (RTD) shake, then pick up the EAS CarbAdvantage shakes (4-packs at WalMart for around $5.00. You can do this!!!

Hayley,
as for the prep it really isnt that bad! it really tasted awful and then i waited and waited a few gurgles and not really much happened. i was really expecting alot more. you have to remember your just on liquids pretty much so there isnt much there that needs to come out. about your menstrual cycle. i got mine the day before surgery!!! that was extreme fun!!! i had my surgery at methodist and they were all very understanding. mine seemed to stop as soon as i had surgery. i guess thats how my body reacted to the anesthesia. where is your surgery? i live in norwood so im not very far from you! good luck to you! i wish you well! wendy
