OT...Childrens ICU

So...
here I sit with my 15year old.  Since Weds night.  He had the brilliant idea to make a slam dunk playing basketball-jumping from a chair.  With sweaty hands. And try to hang on the hoop...the upshot is that the momentum carried his legs up, and his hands slipped off the rim, and he fell 10 feet to the floor on the back of his head.  NOT a wood court, a cement floor.  he fractured his skull, and has collateral damage to the front of his brain, essentially a bruise in the brain (brain bleed).  this is known as a traumatic brain injury, folks. He could be much worse-as it is, he is in tremendous pain-we just had more pain meds put in so he can sleep.  Not sure how long he will be here.  At least they are saying that his responses are good, especially since the pics on the CT are pretty scary.
gonna try to let him rest....

I spent some time in the PICU at Children's this summer with my grandaughter.  Not a place I ever want to visit again.  Very scary, but they were wonderful and took great care of her.  My prayers go out to your son and your family for the strength to get through this and for a complete recovery.

Wow - Lynn, i saw your posts on FB but wasn't sure what had happened.  That is scary as hell - I will send up prayers that his outcome is good and they don't have to do anything too invasive to relieve his pain and all.

With my 13 year old getting a little nuttier by the day, I can't help but think - There but for the grace of God, go I !!

Lynn,
so scary, I pray that it all comes out for the best and he doesn't have permanent damage. My nephew (39) was in a serious motorcyle accident a few weeks ago and also had a brain bleed, he is now home and although he has a problem with short term memory, the dr's expect a full recovery. I pray the same for your son...

God Bless,
CarolN

Lynn our prayers are with you both for the comfort of you and your son, but also that there is no long term damage. I have spent weeks in the hospital with my son at various stages of his 4 short years, mainly for brain-related surgeries) but the anxiety is always high no matter the length of the stay when you're watching your child lie there hurting.

Best wishes to you all and that you get through this as quickly and completely as possible.

God bless,
Shannon

Thanks everyone-still here and waiting for an update today from the doc, Maui went for another CT this morning.  He was able to eat a little last night and has a little more pain control with the new ****tail we put him on yesterday, so he is sleeping better and not quite so grumpy.  Hope to have him moved out of ICU soon, but he will be in the hospital a while yet.  Childrens has been excellent, just not a place you really want to be for days on end as some of you know.  SO glad we live in an area with excellent health care, SO glad for health insurance!!!  most of all, thankful for so many good friends who care-MUAH!!!

Lynn,

As a mother of a child who had a TBI and a CT tech I understand the emotions you are going through.  I understand how hard it is to trust the people who are caring for your son, but have faith that they have nothing but total compasion for your son and your family and will do everything they can to help him heal!  If you need anything or just wanna talk PM me!
