Hi everyone,

I have surgery scheduled on Sept 23 and am completely terrified.

I wanted to fly something past you that truly concerned me about my daughters pre-K.  Last week we attended the family night at the preschool, it's a chance to visit the classroom and meet the teachers etc.  My husband walks into the room and immediately raised his eyebrows at a HUGE hanging McDonalds sign above a kitchen play area that had been turned into a McDonalds, complete with wrappers, drink containers, fry boxes and right down to uniforms and a dollar menu attached to the wall.  This was the 'creative play area'

I spoke with the teacher about not being happy with having corporate representation in the classroom, but having a fast food company as a creative play area was really shocking.  I spoke with the Director of the preschool and told her my concerns, and gave them several options

1. remove the corporate logos etc and make it a generic store or restaurant (good 'creativity exercise would be to let the children decide on to name the store/restaurant and what they sell)

2. put my child in a different classroom

3. we'd have to remove our daughter from the school

they called me back and said they would not remove it, but that it would be changed to something else in a few weeks and if we felt strongly enough we could keep our daughter out of school for those weeks.  They also said they wanted the children "to feel comfortable by having something from the community that they recognize" - that statement sealed the deal and we took her out of that school.

I joined the Kare 11 Moms like me to pass this topic around for discussion and all I got were "I dont see the harm"

It must seem so ridiculous to have the overweight mom be the one complaining, but my girls have never been inside a McDonalds and we live on an 80% organic/whole food diet (I send my kids to school with organic milk even).

I just cannot get over how this isn't an issue for most people, whether you go to McD's daily or once in a blue moon, it still seems so irresponsible to have not only a corporation but a FAST FOOD one inside a preschool classroom

am I stark raving mad or is this truly an issue?

You are perfectly sane, and this is ridiculous and disgusting.  Ugh.

Ditto to the above- shameful!  This is why I love the Montessori curriculum
Every opinion we share, every favor we perform, every moment we intently listen to someone talk about themselves is our opportunity to pass along something positive to a person who needs us.

I couldn't agree with you more.

But I also believe that McDonalds, like it or not, is firmly planted in the world we live in, and I'm not sure it's realistic to try to shield any kids from it forever.  Your kids may have never eaten there, but surely they've seen the golden arches - as sad as it is to bring that into ANY classroom, kids have to deal with the real world.  This could possibly be a real learning experience for your kids, as well as the others - to meet kids who have never eaten there?  WOW!

But as I said, I sincerely couldn't agree with you more.  To make it a generic "restaurant" would be MUCH more creative!  Let the kids all see what the other kids come up with at the idea of having a restaurant!

My kids know what McD's is, they just haven't eaten there. We're not trying to sheild them from anything, in fact we talk to them about pretty much everything...what concerns me, is that there was a fast food corporation with a big presence in a pre-school classroom.

My International friends have been so much more disgusted by this than my American friends and I wonder why? Maybe we just get used to this kind of thing?

Also, most of the other pre-K's I have spoken with have assured me there is no place for that kind of thing in the classroom so I'll move foward with that knowledge.

thanks everyone for the input.
