Insults disguised as compliments

I heard one this morning.  Some lady that works on my floor stopped me and said..."wow, you have lost weight....you are looking handsomer all the time"

Wow.  I really wanted to say something, but since I cannot fix stupid, I bit my tongue.

What have you heard that was insulting but disguised?

Paul, honey, I think you have some old tapes playing in your head.   Unless you know this woman well enough to be confident she was flinging an insult your way, just take it as an awkward compliment that had the best of intentions.

Besides, you can't be "handsomer" unless you were "handsome" first!

Some people who haven't been on this ride just don't get the innuendos they may unintentionally insert in their comments.

As someone who has been fat all my life, I've heard, seen and felt it all.  Holy crap!

Recently, a woman was literally STARING at me in a public place.  I stared right back at her, till she finally turned her head.  Where do these people learn their manners?

Once, when I was young and partying, I was in a bar and a guy poked his buddy and nodded toward me and said: "here's one for you!"  and I turned around, held up my middle finger and said "here's one for YOU!"

I have sometimes responded in a real smart aleck way, but I've learned to be on the high road more now.   Sometimes I actually feel sorry for the losers.  If I had to go around and judge everyone else to make myself feel superior, I must be pretty insecure.

If you wanted to say something to the woman you could have said "Gee, thanks, I didn't think I could get any more handsome!"  Let's face it, people are not very tactful, smart, or kind.  But we can be!!   Good luck.  And, by the way, you are handsome.

What Darla said.  Is it possible she wasn't being negative, rather she just didn't find the right words?

Some people are just akward with words.  I hope that it wasn't a backhanded compliment, but if it was I'd just shrug it off.  You just can't fix stupid.

I get lots of comments, but mostly directed at or about my transracially adopted daughters....it's even worse when stupid rears it's ugly head in front of a four year old.

just smile and walk away knowing that some people just don't have the gift of common sense.

Today I was talking to my coworker and she complimented me on how well I've done. Then I said "Yah, I can't believe I'm half way to goal already (lost 50, goal is to lose 100)...
and she says "Why do you want to be that skinny"?

***** Mind you this comes from the overweight many comorbidities coworker I have who's been diabetic for over 6 mons and verbally told us 6 mons ago that she was in denial and wasn't going to see a doctor about it, and didn't until she almost passed out at work and we had to take her to the ER and her blood sugar had sky rocketed!!!****

I was like   WTF? did you think I did this not to get down to a healthy weight? My goal is 140-150 and thats still like 20-25 lbs above what my BMI/normal weight is for 5'1"... so seriously woman?

I just said "my goal is to be healthy, not skinny, and my surgeon approved that goal for me" and left it at that and walked away
