OT: Geezer Alert!
Geezer Alert
2010 promises to be a watershed year for me. I will turn 50, I am hoping to change careers (rather than writing endlessly about why I need to do that) and, shockingly, I will apparently become a grandfather for the first time. My oldest son is a graduate student who is finishing up his doctorate and starting a new job with a consulting company in
This announcement has me pondering what my role will be. My maternal grandfather was a central figure in the shaping of who I am and it is a blessing that he was a very shy and gentle soul who loved the outdoors. Perhaps this new person coming into my life will allow me a similar privilege, so that he or she may one day find joy and solace in the natural world and remember me fondly just as I remember my grandfather. To me, anyway, it is not what we accomplish or the things we acquire that makes life meaningful, rather it is the hearts we touch and those who manage to touch our own hearts that truly matter. You see, I aspire to be that kind of grandfather, one whose memory still brings a smile to your face many years after their passing.
WLS has given me a new lease on life, a longer, healthier life that I want to use to both spoil and enchant my forthcoming grandchild, among other things. Does that make me a geezer or at least a geezer in the making?

Enjoy the blessings of the upcoming year, RP!

I'm down 120 pounds - thanks to RNY! Working on the next 25. Then I'll tackle more...
Rick,
By all means you do not have to act mature at all. Our grandchildren refer to my husband as the 'fun' Grandpa! When we are with them he is like one of the kids and have helped them pull some pretty good pranks on their mother. She can not get mad at the kids because grandpa told them to do it!! They also know at my house they can have chocolate milk and brownies for breakfast or anytime they want. I wish I lived closer to my grandchildren so I could see them more often. This summer was the first time they spent a week with us and we had a blast. They even got to go home with a new puppy. We are lucky the parents still talk to us!! Enjoy your new bundle of joy when he/she arrives.

If being 50 and being a grandparent is a "GEEZER", then I am a geezer, and proud of it. Being a grandparent is the most wonderful gift your adult child can give you. You get to love that little one unconditionally, spoil them rotten and then send them back to your adult child, the parent. They have to deal with the baby all the time, we get to choose when we want to have them. Totally different than when our kids were little.
I cherish each day I have with Nemi and hope that your grandchild will bring you as much love, pleasure, smiles and burped on clothes as Nemi does me and Marlin. She will be 3 in 6 weeks and I can hardly believe it has already been that long!
Get ready for the next most fantastic ride of your life!!!!!!!!! Save up your money cuz these additions are expensive and open your heart to pure joy that this bundle will bring.
Prayers for a uneventful pregnancy and delivery.
