Plastic's Due to Mental health issues with Minnesota care
Hey Diane, have you considered going into therapy first? I am starting that process now so that I can work through the body image issues.
Hi Elena,
Thanks for answering. Yes I have sought counciling. I am in it now....Not just for this, but also other issues. I totally understand that this is more of a mind thing then it is a body thing. I often say the physical side of this journey is actually the easy part... it's the mental roller coaster that comes with it that no one ever prepares us for.....
By the way, on facebook, I noticed a lot of posts about a Mike... and then nothing... what happened there?
Thanks for posting

IMO, a counselor is your best bet. Get the proper help you need for dealing with the mental aspect of this journey.
PS may help rid you of excess skin, Diane, but it's not going to cure your brain. We all say "WLS is surgery on your tummy not your brain", well the same goes for plastics. Still not brain surgery.
As far as coverage, have you documented with your PCP any rashes, lesions, etc.? That always seems like the first step to getting insurance to pay for any part of PS. However, if you're having hernia issues or other medical issues that requires a surgery anyhow, you never know.
You live in Fridley. You do know Unity has a support group for WLS patients, right? Perhaps you should start there.

I would totally disagree with anyone telling you that plastics is going to make you better.
As someone that has done it, I am still the same person I was before minus some ugly skin.
Instead I have ugly scars. You must be happy with yourself and no amount of surgery is going to fix the head stuff. Everyday I am working on just loving myself and wrapping my head around the fact that no number of complements from anyone can make me feel better. I have to make myself feel better.

I would have to agree, you have to fix your self image - changing your body will only give you other issues to stress over.
I recently had to have surgery to remove some masses from my ovaries, and a MAJOR hernia repair in my upper abdomen. As an unexpected bonus, I had a good bit of "redundant skin" removed from my lower abdomen - my surgeon said it would help the incision heal to NOT be caught in the fold/overhang, which was how he justified doing it. It was NOT considered PS, but it was a real bonus to me.
I was HAPPY with myself, essentially, beforehand. I did NOT stress over my apron - at my age, I figured it hardly mattered. Now that it's gone? Yeah, I've got a whale of a scar and a couple of dog ears to look at. Am I gonna stress over THAT? F*** no. Not worth it.
YOU HAVE TO LEARN TO BE HAPPY IN YOUR OWN SKIN. THAT is the biggest hurdle!
