Pain meds after open surgery

How long did you guys need to take pain meds after your open RNY? I'm on diluadid and it's barely covering it (it does allow me to sleep for a small period of time).

I just realized tomorrow is Labor Day so Dr office won't be open.

Open DS, but all the same - still open. My incision didn't hurt as much as my re-arrange did. I came home on pain meds, tried to keep up with them best I could, but I was so loopy from them, that I weaned off pretty quickly. About a week on them at home and then that was it.

What kind of pain are you experiencing, or is it just more that you haven't slept well?
Don't hesitate to call for something stronger, Farrah! Especially if you're not sleeping well. You need that rest right now.

Even though it's a holiday today, there should be someone on call at your surgeon's office who can call in a Rx for you.

Hugs!!!

You're thinking ahead of me! I just called and talked to my surgeon (he was on-call) and is going to give me a 2nd med to mix it up with. Every 2 hours will be dilaudid a then lortab. He's calling it in now and I'm off to wake up hubby so he can go get it for me :)

Hey, Farrah!
Like Diamond Girl, I also had open DS, and my guts hurt more at first than my incision did.  I had surgery on a Tuesday, went home on the following Sunday, and took my Roxicet for the last time the following Monday night when I went to sleep.  I get the feeling that's probably not normal, but I HATE feeling drugged, and I'd rather be clear-headed and a little sore.  I'm 3 weeks out tomorrow and have hardly any pain, except for some occasional soreness in my incision.  I'm even starting to sleep on my stomach a bit (with lots of down pillows involved!)  I'd say take what you need to feel okay- not covering your pain will not help you heal.  Do what you gotta do, and feel better soon!
