I had Lap RNY at St. Mary's (Mayo) 08/12/09.  My surgeon was Dr. Swain & Dr. Slater.  I had the best care all the way around from the check-in staff, nurses, anesthesiologist and of course the doctors.  This was a great experience for me and I feel healthier everyday.

Hi!  I had my surgery in April '05 with Dr. Que.  The only thing I did was try to follow the after-surgery rules prior to surgery.  The Mayo program doesn't require you to lose any weight prior to surgery, but they did tell me that if I gained even one pound by the day of surgery, they would not do it.  I was so freaked out by this that I worked at following the rules before surgery and ended up losing 20 lbs.!  They also don't require a liquid diet or any pre-surgery prep.  I have nothing bad to say about my experience there.  You really don't need to bring much...the only things I used were my Chapstick and my own pillow (with a colored pillowcase so they don't think it's theirs).  They had everything else I needed.  I didn't even read my book or use my MP3.

I had my surgery in March at Mayo and agree with everything above.  I know that even though no liquid diet before surgery is required, some of the docs require a bowel prep and my endo suggested I use an antiseptic soap before surgery (both procedures are just to protect you in case the surgery has to be more invasive).  The experience was as mentioned above, excellent.  I did gain weight between my endo visit and my surgeon visit.  I was told I had to lose that excess in the two months before my surgery date or they would put off the surgery.  I have heard that Dr. Que is very matter of fact and blunt.

Good luck,
