State fair food

Tomorrow we are taking a group of clients to the state fair.  I have decided to venture out without packing my lunch as it will not be practical to do so.  Has anyone been to the state fair yet?  I am looking for lunch ideas to help keep me on track for the day.  I am sure most things "on a stick" are probably deep fried and things I should avoid.  I have only been to the state fair one other time and I am thinking I remember a Famous Dave's which is probably a relatively safe option.  Any other ideas?

Thanks guys!

I think I remember hearing something about a large organic market there that has fruits and I think they had sandwiches too.  Not sure where it is.  Have fun!

I'm all about the "all the twinkies you can drink"

Well okay, maybe not.  MODERATION!!!!!

You have CORN COBS,
Ephinany Diner (not deep fried)
Take the bun out of the footlong...pure protein
Agriculture building with the freshest fruit
Turkey Legs
Foods building....some healthy choices in there

If you can tolerate sugar, some bites will not kill you, just hang out with a kid that can finish what you start.  You CAN bring your own food into the fair.  Carry your choice in a disposable container.

It is not easy, but you will be doing a lot of walking....it's possible that it will be a wash.  Careful to keep hydrated, careful with foods you know will cause problems (don't make exceptions)  Carry flavor sticks...makes water an easy choice.

I'll be there tomorrow too.

The only thing I NEED every year at the fair, are cheese curds.  I KNOW I can't eat a whole order anymore, but I'm gonna buy 'em and share 'em with the friend I'm going with.

Otherwise, i pretty much stick to the porkchop on a stick (to DIE FOR!!!), and lots of snow cones.  Not a big state fair foodie, believe it or not - never was, not even at my most ginormous.

I've heard the bacon-wrapped turkey tenderloin by the International Village (?) is really yummy, that wouldn't be a bad choice!!

Good luck!!

Thanks for the wonderful options everyone.  Since Famous Dave's are a dime a dozen I think I will look for something a little different.  I am right there with you in wanting my cheese curds, Darla.  I am thinking I might buy some, eat two or three bites and give the remainder to some of the people that we bring.

Just have fun at the fair, Tami! If you can, try and not think about the fair as a place to eat. Lots of time to walk around, look at strange people, take in a scavenger hunt if you can (make your own, depending on who you are going with), and just enjoy the sights. To me, food isn't a big deal. I could go and eat absolutely nothing. Its all overpriced anyway.

Ok, when I went last year I did eat a few too many cookies. But honestly, if I was going this year I wouldn't have a problem going and not eating anything. I'm sick of corn. And everything else just doesn't sound appealing.

Just go and have fun. Remember food is just fuel. But if you do have something, moderation!

Don't forget to get the free yard stick. Those are always great for the kids!

Okay, just got done talking to my daughter who swears by the turkey sandwich you can get at the fair.  It is her FAVORITE thing.

The place is called "Turkey to Go" and it is right in front of the entrance where the buses stop, in front of the Animal Birthing Center and the Milk Barn is behind it.  She loves the sandwiches and says that you wouldn't thing they would be so great - as they are "only" turkey sandwiches, but she makes a point to get one every time she is there.  Turkey is a good protein source, so go for it - you can easily throw the bread away!

Have fun at the Fair.

I had some grilled shrimp (not sure where it was) and it was really good!

I ended up eating the most amazing Greek salad w/ chicken.  I wish I could have brought the leftover portions home.  I did eat a few cheese curds and about five cinnamon almonds but felt I did pretty well overall.  What a fun day!
