Irony is…

…being publicly recognized for 25 years of service to a Company when you are contemplating a significant career change that could lead someplace else.

…being served Dairy Queen ice cream cake at your 25 year Company service recognition event when you have had gastric bypass surgery (I was polite and had a small piece and no dumping occurred).

…working for 25 years to support a home in the country where you could raise your family and realizing that after they have moved on to their adult lives, that you no longer have a strong desire to live there.

…having your adult offspring worried that they cannot keep up with you after WLS when you spent their entire childhood and their adolescent years being too obese to keep up with them.

…having practiced the art of being an overly serious person for most of your adult life only to find that as you approach the age of 50, that you really enjoy making a mess in the kitchen, riding your bike in the mud, fishing on a sunny afternoon, walking in the woods with no purpose and talking to your dog about your dreams like a 10 year old boy.

What are your ironies?

Did you get a lot of comments at the 25 year company anniversary about your weight loss?  Good you ate a small piece of the DQ cake and didn't dump.  That would have sucked feeling like you had to, doing it, and then paying the price.

I was very nervous today, we had an all colleague meeting with lots of people I haven't seen in a while. Lots of comments about me looking different, new hair, pretty, "wow I didn't recognize you," etc.  Makes me uncomfortable getting feedback and attention amidst other people.  I'm fine with it one on one, but it never seems to happen that way lately.  At least not at work.  You would have thought I was sporting a mohawk vs just touching up my roots and chopping a few inches off my hair.  Something I'll have to get used to I guess.  It's nice to get positive feedback, just embarrassing to me, that's all.

My small department moved to a new building recently, so most of the people here don't know me (and I wasn't notified until yesterday about the event, so I wasn't able to invite some of my old friends) or have reason to wonder about my weight loss.

The comments and compliments about how you look after weight loss, especially if you have also changed how you dress, changed your hairstyle, or are carrying yourself with more confidence are nice, but embarassing, too.  I have had to force myself to dress in a manner more consistent with how I look now, which resulted in me having to become accustomed to people looking at me and not looking away.  I am still not used to that, but it doesn't bother me as much any more.
