Considerably OT: Magnificent Princess Mia is Gone

My old golden retriever, Mia, died on Saturday while I was out of town.  She had been slowing down all summer, but still wagged her tail enthusiastically and seemed to enjoy being petted when we left Friday morning.  My daughter let her out Saturday morning and, when she didn't return, looked for her in the woods behind our house.  She found Mia crawling in the woods.  A neighbor helped carry her in the house where she died a couple of hours later.

My kids bought Mia 13-1/2 years ago, but she decided in short order that she was my dog.  Her AKC papers said that her official name was Magnificent Princess Mia.  She was magnificent, truly and completely.  The breeder cried when we picked her out of all the puppies because she had such a sweet disposition and the lady was sad to see her go..... but not as sad as my family is right now.

People laughed because she constantly followed me around at a distance of 5 to 10 feet all of her life.  She was my fishing buddy who thought it was her right and privilege to lick any fish that came in the boat and was fascinated with watching fish swimming around in the livewell.  She was a great comfort to me as I stumbled through all of the emotional machinations i have written about here for the past 4 or 5 months.  Most of all she was a loving companion, a constant and comforting presence in my life.

I know she had a good life and she didn't suffer in the end, for which I am very glad.   I can hardly even glance at her food dish, though, without having tears well up in my eyes.   She was a great joy and, as such, will be sorely missed.  If good dogs go to heaven, I am sure she is already there.

I am so sorry RP! If my pup passed away I think I would curl up and die emotionally! Pets can be just like people to us!! I'm so sorry.

Elena:

Mia was one of those dogs who just wrap themselves around your heart.  Thank you for your response.

Thanks sweety :) You know how much I truly love you as well. And I can't imagine losing my pup... so I can't imagine the heartbreak you and RP felt/are feeling.

RP,

I am so sorry for the loss of your loved one.  I, too, have a golden retriever and know just how special they are.  I am glad she didn't suffer and that you know she had a wonderful life with you and your family.  Please take care of yourself and allow yourself the time to grieve.

Thank you.  Grieving will take time, but I have so many good thoughts and memories of her that it is hard to let the sadness through just yet.
