Emotional Eating?

I've always thought of myself as someone who just loves to eat, who has the genetic predisposition to obesity, who eats to celebrate and/or be social, who is a good cook and enjoys food, and who knows how to manage stress.  Recent events have convinced me I am more of an emotional eater than I thought.

Some financial surprises this summer, my journey to have the surgery, physical pain, and a few other stresses have got me grabbing for food.  All this, while I'm actually trying to drop some weight in anticipation of my surgery date - which should be given fairly soon!  I guess I'll have to pay much closer attention and figure out a better way to deal with it.

Mary:

18 months ago I could have written your first paragraph about myself.  However, it didn't take much stress to plop me right on the road to emotional eating.  I had to learn to deal with stress and emotions differently....I am still working on that, by the way.  One of the things that helped me was to track my daily servings of various food groups and water (not calories) during my 4 month pre-surgery weight loss program.  I chose to be honest with my entries in the table and charts I created to see how I was doing.  Emotional eating/bad food choice days were pretty obvious and, after forgiving myself for my own transgressions, seeing the deviations from healthy eating behavior helped me focus on getting back on track.  Despite having some bad days, I still managed to lose 60 lbs.  in that time,so it worked for me.  I can e-mail you the Excel spreadsheet I used, if that would be of interest to you.  If not, I think you have taken a marvelous step forward in recognizing emotional eating when you are doing it.  With some forgiveness for yourself and some patience, I am sure that you will learn to deal with your stress-related emotions differently as time goes on.  Please keep us posted on your progress and your surgery date.

Good luck,

RP
