My first appt is tomorrow
Hi,
My first appointment is tomorrow at the U of M Weight Management Center. I'm a little nervous and excited. Not too sure what the appointment will be like. They sent me a packet of infomation but nothing too specific as far as the appointment. My sister will be going with for moral support and also another set of ears. I started to keep a food journal about a week ago. That's been the hardest so far and most enlighting.
I have some general questions already but was wondering if anyone could suggest any more? I am looking into the lap band.
Thanks!
Michelle

it usually starts with the informational seminar, then you meet with the Dr, and then a dietitian. You will find out, based on your health history and current medical condition what you need to do in preparation. The typical things are a psych eval, dietician visits, stop smoking (if you do) and I think most preop patients are asked to lose a bit of weight, again that will depend on a number of things.
It's great that you are keeping a food journal. Now is the time to identify anything that could be a barrier to your success.
You could ask out post op followup, the schedule for fills if you get the band, success rate of band patients in the program, potential short and long term complications. How much experience, lapbands and gastric bypasses - it's always good to get the 411 on the dr.
If they do ask you to lose weight, you could find out what their reasoning is, I think different programs will tell you different things, you could also ask what happens if you don't lose your preop weight, you could also ask about the post op eating plan, vitamins and exercise expectations.
Good luck, this is such an exciting time for you!

Hey and welcome! I have the band - great tool! If you have band-specific questions... also hit the LapBand forum... there are a ton of experts there and also newbies in the same boat. I love my band... down about 100lbs so far...
We also have a group of people who get together that are LapBanders that are part of Unity Hospital (I, myself, went to Park Nicollet)... they meet for coffee every Sunday... good to hear from banders in all stages of the journey.
PM me if you have questions!
