Vitamins & Insurance?
Hello, I am just curious and wondering if anyone's insurance pays for their vitamins? Since having WLS most of us cannot take regular vitamins and I was just wondering if a DR wrote a prescription out if our insurance company would pay for them.....anyone ever hear of this? I plan on calling BCBS Monday to see what they say. Hey, it's worth a shot!

Sorry to say that typically vitamin and mineral supplements are listed as a exclusion on insurance polies. They are listed in the " General Exclusions" section in the back of your book. I do take regular vitamins, I am able to turn them in to my medical savings account and get them reimbursed with a dcotor's prescription. I have taken prescription strength Vitamin D and gotten it covered with my RX copayment but I doubt any policy would pay for over the counter strength vitamins. I look at it as a trade off.....all the money I am savings on not drink diet coke and eating junk food- I use to pay for my supplements. It is my own form of Health Care reform.LOL.
My flex spending plan through work covers my supplements- I literally just found this out. However with surgery expeneses and copays I'm now out of flex spending $$ until 2010!
I read the fine print for vitamin/over the counter medication purchasing through my flex spending plan and if I provide a receipt along with a prescription for it from my doctor, I should be able to use my flex money to purchase it.
I'm so sad I didn't take more money out this year.
I have not heard of ANY insurances covering supplements. B12 is a medication prescribed by your doctor, so if you prescription coverage that should be covered. Also its possible that Vitamin D could be covered if you are prescribed it (note: both have to be filled through a pharmacy..) I worked in medical insurance for awhile at a previous job and I don't know of any medical plans that will cover regular vitamins.
