I Am A Stastical Anomaly

I finally had my one year follow-up appointment with my surgeon yesterday afternoon.  Pending the results of blood work, it really could not have gone any better.  Dr. Baker was pleased with my weight loss, compliance with supplements, ongoing work with a bariatric psychologist, and the amount of exercise I get.  I thanked him for giving me my life back and I was surprised to have to hold in the tears of gratitude that wanted to leak down my face at that moment.  He requested before and after pictures for their bariatric program website and asked me to speak at one or more of their introductory seminars.  I told him that I would be happy to do both things.

Given my height and current weight, my BMI is still a little over 30 on the BMI chart.  However, the scale at Dr. Baker's office can also estimate body fat % based on an impedance measurement (you step on their scale in bare feet and program the scale to measure impedance...quick and painless).  Anyhow, my body fat is apparently 14%.  That's right, my body fat is less than half of what is indicated on that dastardly BMI chart.  He told me about a professor at St. Thomas who can give you a more scientifically accurate body fat percentage by measuring your bouyancy in a dunk tank, but I am not sure it would be worth spending money  to get more accuracy.  In fact, i rather like the fact that I can now think of myself as a statistical anomaly.....and likely not just relative to the BMI chart.

Congrats on EVERYTHING, Rick

I know a few people who have done the body fat thing with Dr. Dunk (I believe that's what they call him), I could probably get his info for you if you decide you'd like to do that.  If I recall, the cost was pretty reasonable...

I know the BMI charts are an easily accessible tool for anyone, but their accuracy is a bit questionable.  I'm still over 30 as well.  Barely, but still...
