Dehydration--Be careful this summer

So I ended up in the ER today due to dehydration. My potassium was up to normal (had been low earlier this week and went on supplements) but I was still having bouts of low blood pressure and major fatigue. Yesterday I fainted at work.

I thought I had been getting in enough water but apparently not. I've been sweating as much as I did last summer even though I'm over 135 lbs lighter which surprised me.

The reason I'm posting this is that there are a lot of new people on the board and I just wanted to remind especially the new post-ops to make sure they are getting adequate fluids in this summer.

I just can't drink the water like I used to so it's been a challenge this summer, even 6 months out.

This has been a public service announcement from a crabby tired woman...forgive the lack of humor in it. 5 hours in the ER will do that to a girl.

Anna:

Excellent timing on your post!  I have been consuming more than a gallon of liquids a day for the past week so that I don't get dehydrated when I exercise.  From what I can tell, that is barely adequate.

AMEN, sistah!  Gotta keep pushing those fluids... keep a supply of SF flavors on hand at all times if you don't like plain water, it helps!  (I like raspberry lemonade, and raspberry peach CL best these days!)

One thing to add, tho.   If you ARE getting in a decent amount of water, and find yourself heading out for a drive of more than 20 minutes?   DON'T FORGET TO MAKE A QUICK PIT STOP BEFORE YOU HIT THE ROAD!!!

Just sayin'....

Thanks for the warning Anna.  I'm curious, how much water do you think you were getting in, which turned out not to be enough?  I know I'm not the queen of fluids, but I would say I safely get in 60oz of water alone in a day.  Maybe that's not enough when it's hot out?

Hope you're feeling better.

Oooo - so sorry to hear you ended up there, but so glad you went in & didn't ignore it!  Always better to get rehydrated, even if it's via IV!

I took Heavy Whipping Cream and put 1 part in a glass. Added 3 parts of SF Ocean Spray Cran-Grape juice to it. OMG - YUMMMMMMMY! Kind of like an Italian Soda, without the fizz!

Get creative with your liquids, they don't all have to come from straigh****er.

Thanks for the reminder for us newbies.. Its hard enough getting liquids in let alone adding more during the hot days! I feel like i drink from sun up to sun down... ugh! Know I have to do it though!

I'm sure I'm not getting enough water. Kristy, you are probably just fine...go by what you feel.  I've worked almost 12 days straight on the phone for about 7 hours a day and that's talking time (our busy season). So I've really not been drinking enough because I get engrossed in my calls and forget to drink. And the problem I've had is once I start getting dehydrated, my body really doesn't want liquids at all...yes it's stupid but it's a symptom of a bit more advanced dehydration. So it all just gets worse on its own power.

You can get away with not drinking a plentiful amount of water when its cold out but not when it starts to get in the 80s. So basically, use me as the bad example and make sure you do better than me.

I'm going to implement a plan at work that I was going to do when I got back to work after surgery but didn't. I had bought a Hello Kitty mini water "cooler" that holds 64 oz of water. I'm going to fill it up in the morning when I get to work and I've got to have it empty by the time I leave.

Drinking water as I type this,

I hope you're feeling better soon and thank you for sharing your experience.  I wouldn't have thought about this and makes total sense.  Fluids are hard to keep pushing, but I am making every effort to keep sip sip sipping.

Feel better

Oh wow, I'm glad you're okay!!

To get myself to drink a lot more water I filled a 1/2 gallon bottle (it was an old Old Orchard Light Cranberry bottle) with water and added a flavor tub thing to it and brought it to work.  Coworkers laughed a little but at least I drank the whole thing and then some.  I can definitely feel it when I'm not drinking a lot.

Anna-
I'm sorry that you had to spend 5 hours in the ER, but glad that you were smart enough to go and get the help that you needed.

I try to get in abotu 100 oz. of water over the day.  I'm very thankful for indoor plumbing!!
